Hi everyone, I’m an incoming freshman at VT and I plan on majoring in secure computing after my first year of general engineering and potentially adding on a double major in finance. I’ve heard some pros and cons of living in an LLC as a first year student, and I was wondering if anyone had experiences in any of these LLCs that could help me make a decision. I’m allowed to apply for 3 LLCs, so I’m currently deciding on which 3 to apply to. I think I’m definitely gonna apply to Hypatia and Digerati, but I’m deciding between Innovate and Impact. I would also like to know if anyone has good/bad experiences in these LLCs. Thank you!
There was a recent rant on Reddit about Hypatia. The OP didn’t think it was worth it, took up too much time, and the work was graded strictly.
DD was in Hypatia and liked it but it comes down to what you are looking for and possibly how social you are and want to be. She made a nice group of friends and had people from day 1 to go to the weeks of welcome events.
Pros- living with other engineers who have the same amount of work as you have so study groups form and the upper class leaders have all taken the same classes and they can help too.
- less expensive dorm
- Required networking and career services including early job fair access which led to DD getting a summer internship
- Pretty easy to stay as a student leader or mentor if you want another year in the dorms
- Required social and service activities to help meet people which was anything from game night to getting pizza
- Easy A 1 credit class
- Small makerspace in dorm
Cons - No AC in the dorm although this isn’t bad with 2 fans
- standard dorm room and hall bathrooms
- 1 credit class and required activities could be seen as annoying and busy work
- being in a dorm with all engineers
Hope that helps a little.
