Thoughts on the NJIT Campus

I know that some people may attach a stigma to the NJIT campus being in Newark, but here are our thoughts on the Campus, having made two visits there:

Pros:

 • Campus is compact and everything is in short walking distance, a plus for those who don’t want long trips between classes or from classes to their dorms.
 • Campus is fairly well contained within a “city block” – in other words, there is much less need to cross streets to move around the campus, unlike other urban campuses, such as Drexel.
 • Very close to public transportation that can move you throughout NJ or into NYC.
 • Adjacent to the Rutgers Newark Campus, for additional social / academic opportunities.
 • Campus police are very diligent about sending alerts to warn about crime or risks on campus – there are also an abundance of opportunities to get an escort / ride if you need it.
 • Close to the Ironbound district of Newark with some great Portuguese cuisine!

Cons:

 • It is a small campus and you really have to be careful about drifting away from it, especially after dark. Simply put, do not travel alone off the campus at night – travel in groups.
 • Thus, it could have the feel of being in a small protective bubble, that could feel confining to some students.
 • The buildings are all pretty modern, so if you’re looking for a quaint ivy-covered campus, this is not the place.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks mtown27…definitely worth a look!! Let us know where your son decides! Best!
