Thought I’d provide an update now that applications are starting to get submitted. As predicted, the list has changed yet again … but that’s okay. I have gone hands-off for the balance of this journey.
Applications sent:
Yale (REA)
St. Olaf
Hamilton
Reed
Bates
Bellarmine
Remaining apps planned:
Amherst
Bowdoin
Smith
Mt. Holyoke
She got a firm thumbs-up from her counselor on this list. I’m glad she has Bellarmine in there as a solid safety. Now to see how it all turns out.
Thank you! We are waiting for REA decision on the 14th, and then all other results will be January and after. Well, and the acceptance to Bellarmine which is nice to have in the back pocket even though I know it is definitely a fall-back plan for her.
We shall see … I’m glad this time of year is so busy otherwise to keep our minds off of it for the most part.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen elsewhere some pretty nice results for your family, but was wondering if you wanted to share them here? How’s the narrowing down process going?
I figured I’d post results here as well to possibly help someone in the future.
As some of you know from reading my posts in the Class of 24 thread, my husband has become disabled over the past year, so we became even more dependent on need-based aid since the time I originally posted this thread. Thankfully we’ve had great luck in that department, with two schools being practically full-rides and the other two still being very manageable:
Awesome! Hamilton was very high on my personal list for D24, but its NPC put it on the outer fringe of affordability. Anyhow, you have some great options!
I am sorry for the health difficulties that your husband is having, but am thrilled that your D has such great, affordable options. Looking forward to hearing how she finalizes her decision!
I’m rooting for Bates! FWIW, Smith is need-aware, so I’m guessing that’s why they waitlisted her - it’s typically less selective than the other schools where she was admitted.
Congrats! I hope Bates ends up at the top of the list! Mine is doing a psych major there and I think it’s a very cool department. Advisor is great. The stats class (one of the tougher classes for psych majors) has a lot of support, with a regular Thursday teacher-led “lab,” which is for extra review. It helps a lot! Also, for overlap in the community, psych/neuro majors at Bates do some interesting projects in Lewiston/Auburn. Mine has done work with dementia patients locally, and also work making a podcast with a local recovery center (for those struggling with addiction). These psych/neuro projects are part of the regular classwork at Bates, so you don’t have to go out and find these opportunities. The professors connect you. Some examples in other areas: sociology combined with volunteering at the local boys and girls club; pre-med classes combined with working at one of the two medical centers across from campus. As a small liberal arts college, Bates does a nice job of keeping coursework relevant to today’s world, and helps build the foundation for future careers/graduate study.
If your daughter has an interest in the intellectual underpinnings of psychology, she should know — and may already — that maverick American psychologist and preeminent behaviorist B. F. Skinner graduated from Hamilton.
@westcoastfam, @merc81 - thanks for the info on Bates and Hamilton. I’ll pass it along to her. I know she’s busy making pros/cons/interesting stuff lists.
