***Thread For BS/MD/DO 2023-2024 Applicants/Parents ***

This is my first post in this forum. I am a parent of a high school student, who is exceptional, like I am sure all yours are :+1:

He has applied to the following BSMD or EA programs, Saint Louis University, Baylor, University of Cincinnati, University of Sienna, Albany College of Pharmacy and Science, Wayne University,UMKC, university of Arizona, University of Alabama Birmingham, University of Syracuse, University of Illinois, Purchase College.

He has received admission notices from most of the undergrad programs and the honors college, and received the basic merit scholarships in many of the institutions applied to. Grateful for that. However, really wanting to track when the interview notices come out for the medical programs. Any other parents out there with kids applying for these schools?

Have not received any interview letters yet, but will share when we receive anything. Hope you will do the same!

Is NSU BS/MD or BS/DO?

Nova Southeastern offers both BS/DO AND BS/MD programs.

Coming from a less established program without a track record of residency placement will make matching into competitive specialties more difficult, but not impossible.

Relevant research with publications in the specialty, high Step 2 scores, AOA/top 5% ranking in their class, strong LORs from well-known preceptors in the specialty and excellent audition rotation performance will all help with competitive specialty matching.

Also program signaling, geographic preference signaling, program fit and other details of an ERAS application will affect how well a student aiming at competitive specialties matches.

All of these things are within the student’s control.

It may be helpful to look at how residency programs directors look at applicants–

Anyone applying today is looking at 8 years before residency application. A lot of things can change for any college during 8 years, let alone the actual process of applying for residency.

This year is the 1st 4 year batch applying with Step1 pass/fail and no one seems to have clue how residencies are selecting their interview invitations. OTOH, many competitive fields have gone into restricting the number of apps one can make while people applying to internal medicine are doing anywhere between 10 and 300 (lots of visa requiring IMGs). There will be lot of additional refinement for all these fields.

How selective is Augusta for a OOS candidate ? Average GPA, NMSF, good research exp, volunteering, shadowing etc. Got admission into pre med with some merit aid , however the next step application has lot of essays and videos that seem to take time in the midst of other priorities. Any guidance on the selectivity of the application? Was concerned being OOS and threw a stone, but their UG admission and merit aid received was welcoming like being in state. However the next step application might take a day off so checking and please advise.

They take between 1 to 5 out of state students. MCG is a public university and committed to GA residents. OOS with a connection to GA is better than no connection. You need to decide for yourself though. Undergrad admission with out of state waiver is very common with Augusta.

What does OOS with a connection to GA mean? Thank you

Some ties to Georgia

For Rutgers we are getting emails to apply to honors college , does BS/MD need honors college application to be submitted also?

Rutgers-Newark (RU-N) Honors College is only by invitation.
Select high-achieving students are invited to apply after they are accepted into RU-N.

It is not required for BA/MD.

Can you please give an idea when we can expect the Rutgers interview invitations to come by? My S is invited to apply to honors too. Can we wait till after the interview invites come, to decide whether to apply to honors or not?

Does knowing a faculty in a college that offers a pathway program (SLU) help an applicant admission in any way? Like can we request any type of referral or association that can help the applicant? In general the applicant is inspired by watching this faculty professor remotely as a family friend but not sure on application how it can help for admission into a BS MD program. Please suggest

FYI - We have seen interview invites for Penn State/SKMC being communicated to our students.

Faculty members who know applicants (even slightly) are required to recuse themselves from all discussion about the applicant.

While your child can certainly mention being inspired by watching videos of a certain professor, but I doubt it will have any impact on the applicant’s admission process.

I am assuming that you are a parent for IL since your son has applied for UIC. From my experience with both my boys applying for BS/MD one with exceptional credentials, chances are slim for the following colleges

  1. University of Cincinnati
  2. UAB

My suggestion is to focus on other schools and if time permits apply for the secondary apps for those schools as they prefer the instate (in case of #1) and regional (for #2) students.

This is from my experience and can others can share theirs as well.

Thank you for the feedback :-). Yep, we are in illinois. If you don’t mind my asking, were your sons admitted to the BS/MD programs they applied to? My son has already applied to Cincinnati and to University of Alabama Birmingham EMSAP. Haven’t heard anything yet. A bit early to have heard something quite yet I think. Probably not much of a chance. However, you don’t know if you don’t try.

Yes, both of my boys got admitted to different BS MD programs. Oldest one is at UMKC and youngest changed his mind to go to Wharton though he got into 4 BS MD programs.

Other pros may disagree but I feel that those two schools give preference to in state and regional candidates big time.

Same with Penn and UPitt at least from my personal experience. I know that success rate is low single digits but was shocked when both of them rejected our second one who has stellar credentials especially Penn at the first stage itself.

My recommendation is to focus on where your son has a better chance.

I don’t understand why the Penn program is so competitive since it still requires MCAT and has strict matriculation criteria. I understand that it was one of the first 6 year programs in the country, but you don’t even get to go the Penn State Medical school which I find ridiculous. BTW my daughter got her denial from the program today, but she did the UPitt supplemental which is not due until January and is extensive to say the least.

I would agree we don’t know what it is going to look like, but I have a feeling that it is going to be dependant on a few factors:

  1. Class Rank
  2. Research
  3. Prestige of the Medical School
  4. Rec’d Letters

After I posted this I realized that WayOutWestMom posted a similar response. It is clear that the most competitive programs heavily relied on standardized cutoffs but now have to use a ā€œholisticā€ review.
