It is all about a guaranteed seat, and the opportunity to match to any specialty if one performs well. Their match list is usually quite good and there were 17 people who matched to Optho this year.
Medical doctorsâ lifestyles and earnings are determined by the specialty they choose during residency.
A medical doctor from Harvard, if they choose Family Medicine, will earn ~ 200K-300K while a neurosurgeon from Jefferson or a ranked 100 medical school will earn ~ 700K+.
Unlike other professions, rankings for medical schools have limited value.
While many programs were closed there are still few top ranked med schools that do participate in BSMD such as UPitt, CASE, BROWN etc..
Those who want to go academics/research or plans to go beyond medicine see value in the rankings and others may like to have that achievement of studying in premier institutions. Both are factors for my DS to reject BSMD.
To each their own.. There are no wrong decisions as long as the student is happy with the choices..
I always said there are many paths but few always advocated for BSMD only regardless of cost and reputation, but donât see them this year.

Please, Pay it forward people
I did not make a post as my son opted not to go the BS/MD route. He applied to a safety school that had one (U of SC). He was awarded a top scholar scholarship for full-tuition/board plus $12k per year enrichment. He has a 4.0uw/36ACT, lots of rigor, attended an application based honors stem high school for juniors and seniors in our state, NREMT, tons of leadership and long-term extracurriculars. He was not selected for an interview. His heart wasnât in it so perhaps that came through in essays or perhaps he just wasnât what they were looking for.
I donât know enough about the process to add much of value. Hope everyone had great results!

My DS is rising junior. He wants to go for pre-Med track OR BSMD. For junior year, he has to decide between taking AP CHEM or AP BIO. In senior year he will be taking AP Physics. So for junior year, should he take AP Biology OR AP Chem? Which one will look better on college applications? His school doesnât offer APâs in 9th and 10th grade. So he has taken Honors Bio and Honors Chem in 9th and 10th respectively.
Honestly⊠it doesnt matter between these two⊠Just try to see who the teacher is and where there is a chance of getting the highest possible grade.
Doesnât matter. Some schools used to require Chemistry. He should take whichever one he is strong in.
In college they prefer Chem before Bio or may be some colleges that require that sequence. Both my kids had bio only in 2nd year of college after working on chem/phys/math in year 1.
Hi all, I know this is a BS/MD thread but would really love any guidance if have any. S24 committed to Notre Dame. He was invited to a 100 person scholar program where he has 12-15 person seminar classes, research and summer opportunities, tutors for orgo and where needed, plus they have a very well thought out and robust med school advising department.
Today he got off waitlist at Brown. Pros to this is open curriculum, grade inflation, on campus EMS (heâs certified and hopes to join), and nearby hospital. More clinical options.
Opinions?
Congratulations, Brown is IVY and open curriculum , looks better option.
He turned down Cornell, he wants fit above all else, but he always liked Brown from the start. How personal ND has made this is hard, itâs a really great community, and heâs mentally invested. Appreciate help.
What is the total COA for both after all scholaships etc.
Brown is supposed to be happiest school that kids go ,
Cornell has grade deflation
