Three Master's Degrees: Overkill?

Do you think having more than two master’s degrees is an overkill?

Yes. (10 char)

Yes. What do you need them all for?

No, as one might be an MBA, another in a foreign language & one in humanities or science. It would be overkill if you were attempting to get a position as a college professor and it might appear that you don’t have the determination or ability to get the necessary PhD.
I know of several positions in private industry where such a combination would be considered a strong plus. If you are in a position to continue with your education and you are in your mid-twenties age wise, then get the third masters degree as it is much harder to return to school when work, family & age play a more significant role in one’s life.

It also might depend on your field. In some fields, where the norm is to go from undergrad directly to a PhD program, three masters degrees might seem hard to justify. In theology, however, it’s sometimes recommended that you have two masters degrees under your belt before applying to doctoral programs, which suggests that three masters degrees would not be at all anomalous.

i did a BS/MS in chemistry, then entered a PhD program, where an MA and MPhil are awarded before the PhD … some people call them consolation degrees, but honestly i’m looking forward to marching at commencement anyway. (who knows, what if the PhD doesn’t work out? celebrate while you can)

I have three masters degrees. They are all in education and they are all in different concentration areas: I have a MAEd in Instructional Technology, an MEd in School Counseling, and a MSEd in Spanish Language Education.
I feel that I am better prepared to do several jobs in the K-12 as well as at the collegiate levels.
For example: If I teach Spanish, I definitely am a better employee if I have a strong handle of Instructional Technology. If I am a school counselor, I am definitely a better employee if I speak Spanish, If I am a technology resource teacher, I am better employee if I have a master’s degree in the area.
Therefore, my answer to the question “Three Master’s Degrees: Overkill?” is a resounding NO.

Baris Ata holds 4 master’s degrees from Stanford.

Having jettisoned my PhD, I am probably going to get started on a 2nd Masters in a year or so.

I have one in IR, maybe security studies or intelligence or something like that.

Though for masters collectors, price awareness is key.
