Tier?

What is meant by tier i.e. second tier, third tier? I know that these are rankings that are applied to schools but what do they mean?

1st tier would be a school like the Ivys, NYU Stanford, Duke, CAL, and Michigan.

2nd tier is some of the other LAC’s and most decent state schools.

3rd tier is lesser schools that can still give you a good degree but ones that aren’t as respected. A lot of times a branch campus may be considered a 3rd tier university.

where can you find universities tiers?

There’s no set level of tiers (between level 1 and 2). Generally people know where 3’s belong. Check US News, though they use some contraversy in ranking the schools, that several LAC’s don’t give information in certain catifories (like Sarah Lawrence’s dispute with US News).

nyu and michigan? lol.

ok ok 2nd tier, but there are people who swear UM is as good as cal. I believe cal is superior.

Explain? NYU Stern and Michigan Ross are always in the top rankings for B Schools, and Michigan Engineering is pretty high up there too I believe.

The LSA isn’t anything to laugh at either. While I don’t care about tiers, why the laugh?
