Tiger Woods... unimpressive

[Tiger Woods zings the Stanley Cup finals - International Herald Tribune](http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/06/03/sports/HKN-Stanley-Cup-Notebook.php)

Does anyone else feel like if they were on that teleconference they would’ve butted in with “Yeah, says the golfer”? Pot, meet kettle.

Tiger who?

Although it’s very difficult for me to relate to those who don’t bow before the hockey gods … I can forgive Tiger. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans agree with him (accounting for low hockey ratings, ever for the Stanley Cup). Now, if Tiger lived in the Detroit area … he would be caught up in all things Red Wings & answer differently, I’m sure. BTW, please don’t laugh at the thought of Tiger living in the Detroit area. We’re a bit sensitive about our image in these parts.

Hockey is pretty popular in NH and there are several universities in the Boston area that compete in the sport.

That said, it seems to me to be pretty unprofessional to diss another professional sport. Number four, Bobby Orr was pretty big when I was younger.

What’s wrong with Detroit ? I love Detroit. I love Detroit drivers esp. very courteous and patient with an erratic out of town driver. :o

Well, of course we’re good drivers … we’re the cradle of civilization to the auto industry! We drive to the school bus stop, for heavens sake. We don’t believe in mass transit, because it would result in lower car sales. :)

That quote is very uncharacteristic of Tiger Woods. I would not make any assumptions about him without actually hearing the interview myself. He is always a very gracious and generous individual and I honestly can’t imagine him making that comment, as it’s portrayed in that article.

I actually heard the interview, and I think he was just so surprised by the question that he wasn’t prepared to answer. It was asked jokingly, and he simply answered in a light tone. The Detroit reporters laughed. Hey, if Hockeytown reporters aren’t offended, I’m pretty sure the exchange was just a lighthearted moment that was given too much scrutiny.

It seems to me that if what Wood said is true, people should stop questioning him for stating the truth.

I like watching hockey in person, but I find it very difficult to watch on TV (it’s hard to see the pick on the TV, even big screen TVs.)

kelsmom, I thought it might have been a lighthearted response as you describe. It’s just so unlike him to say something with a negative tone like that. I’m sure, as with much in the press these days, much too much scrutiny is the issue.

razorsharp, if you can’t see the puck even on a big screen tv, you might want to visit your ophthalmologist! It’s not that difficult to see.

I would guess the next generation is going to care more about hockey than golf.

Now, if you could combine the two, THAT would be something I’d pay to watch!

Said in the golf-commentator, whisper voice:
“Michelson on the green at 15, lining up a 20 footer”
“Looks like he has a slight break left to right, Bob”
“Sure does Kenny. And the greens are running fast today. He approaches the ball, takes his time… AND HERE COMES SERGIO OUT OF THE TRAP WITH A VICIOUS CROSS CHECK!!! TAKES THE BALL AWAY AND SKATES OFF WITH IT TO THE NEXT TEE”
“Gotta love the sport, Bob. Haven’t seen a hit that hard since the 97 playoffs. Phil looks a little whoozy. Yeah, there blood on the green all right!”

Ratings would be WAAAAAY up for that kind of game!

I would absolutely watch hockey-golf.

I just thought the Woods quote was highly ironic considering that many Americans consider watching golf akin to watching paint dry. Who’s Woods to be talking? ;)

Back when our local station broadcast the Wings, they used a color on the puck so viewers could see it. My cat LOVED to watch!

Happy Gilmore is all I can say to you golf-hockey lovers … :)

I don’t think anybody watches hockey anymore.

I guess the 4 of us sitting here watching the game must be nobodies …

6 here watching! :)

I’m going to probably get myself in trouble here, but every time I glance over at the title of this thread (Tiger Woods…unimpressive), I keep thinking “not from the back.”

Any polite golf claps from the audience yet for a particularily nice shot on goal? How about whipsering announcers amd guys in the stands holding up sign saying “Quiet Please”. :)

For some reason, hockey’s just not very good on television, but it’s a blast in person. Baseball is the same for me. On the other hand, football in person is nearly incomprehensible, but it’s perfect for television, with instant replays and lots of knowledgeable commentary. Soccer’s boring either way.
