I enjoy TikTok. I visit maybe once a day and enjoy some of my usual followers in a different way - often longer reels, etc. I follow lots of cooking, gardening, health related posters. Some are the same as Instagram, some different.
I don’t use Twitter anymore. I’m not currently interested in adopting a new channel right now. The removal of TikTok is a big change for the social media diet of my kids ages 36,31,27. Because it’s a preferred channel.
I have TikTok, and I’ve used it to scroll through cat and baby videos and send to my daughter when she was younger. Now that she’s 18, in college, and pretty much outgrown it, it’s just taking up digital space on my phone. My how time flies!
I don’t have the app, but TikTok videos are oftentimes embedded in news stories and various websites. So a total ban will affect us all to some degree.
Not a comment about missing or not (don’t use), but I don’t see how Bluesky would be a replacement. It’s not primarily a video-based site. It’s like people who want to leave FB suggesting Bluesky as a replacement. Bluesky is analogous to Twitter, but a very different platform than these other places. I use it because I left the place formally known as Twitter, and it’s a great replacement for that.
I would think that Instagram, especially Reels, would be more analogous to TikTok.
Don’t know what Rednote is, but I’m curious so I’ll read up on that.
I have seen many TikTok people promoting Blue Sky as ONE way to keep in contact with their verbal contact - or they can link to their YOUTUBE or other content.
I’m certainly not an expert on the TT experience. I have seen multiple posts on FB about leaving it for BS, and when I’ve described the disparities which make it a very different experience (not that i want to stick with the toxicity of FB either), they’re surprised because they hadn’t actually been on BS and didn’t know how it worked. But again, I don’t know the TikTok world so if it works for them, cool!
I don’t look at it much, I look at Instagram more. I do feel for all of the content creators who are making money, especially those where it’s their primary source of income. I hope they can pivot to Instagram or something else rather than lose all/most of their income.
I use TT while I am on the elliptical. It passes the time. I use the app for sure at other times.
I have learned quite a bit from the app and the creators. I also get news from some of the creators as well. I find the news creators are much more independent than any of the MSM.
I have used it to see videos of places we want to visit.
I got off twitter about 2 years ago give or take. It is garbage.
I only stay on FB to keep up with family and friends.
Never really liked insta.
Sadly if the ban does in fact happen it will affect a lot of small businesses all across the country.
TikTok is addictive. I’ve used it on and off. Right now I’m on.
I feel sorry for some of these creators who are using TikTok as one of their income streams.
I follow a young mother whose husband is a college football player. You can tell that she works really hard and that the money is helping support her family. From her backstory, there is not family support so for her and some others, I hope that there is some sort of way for this media to continue.
I follow some content creators on instagram or YouTube and will continue to try and follow them on other platforms. But it’s hard because I see one thing one place and completely different things in the other.
Thank you for pointing out the value for users and also the livelihood that many have worked hard to get (followers). Sure there is a lot of fluff but there is also a lot of learning and as mentioned above cultural sharing happening as well.
If a US buyer steps up TikTok could be saved. Seems there have been a few interested parties but no real momentum ….even if they could ink a deal and close quickly, Jan 19th is fast approaching.
