I think the ban will actually be good. I substitute teach in high schools. The kids are not paying attention in class being that they are on their phones. The teachers do try their best to have them put them away. The “I have to go to the bathroom” has become a way for them to facetime each other. I know there are is snapchat/instagram still around, but taking away tiktok will help a smidge. I had a student try to put me on a tiktok with out my permission (hey look at the sub). Yes I reported her.
I agree from an economic/political standpoint (this isn’t the thread for it though). But It’s terrible for our youth- coming from a teenager.
While many people believe TikTok to be “terrible for our youth” that’s not a good enough reason for the government to ban a website/app. Can you imagine the consequences, if the US government banned every app/website/movie/TV show/book/… that they believed may have a negative impact on American kids?
However, that negative effect youth wasn’t the reason that was given. The Supreme Court doc gives the following explanation. The US government’s problem is not explained as the potential negative impact on youth, but rather protecting Americans from potential Chinese governmental influence. The US only composes ~17% of TikTok’s members, so I’m not surprised that TikTok has not agreed to the proposed solution of selling the company to US ownership.
In August 2020, President Trump issued an Executive Order finding that “the spread in the United States of mobile applications developed and owned by companies in [China] continues to threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.” Exec. Order No. 13942, 3 CFR 412 (2021). President Trump determined that TikTok raised particular concerns, noting that the platform “automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users” and is susceptible to being used to further the interests of the Chinese Government.
…
Just days after issuing his initial Executive Order, President Trump ordered ByteDance Ltd. to divest all interests and rights in any property “used to enable or support ByteDance’s operation of the TikTok application in the United States,” along with “any data obtained or derived from” U. S. TikTok users
The 2024 version of the ban gives the following explanation on the Congressional website:
H.R. 7521, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is bipartisan legislation that will protect Americans by preventing foreign adversaries, such as China, from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating the American people through online applications like TikTok.
The poster did not say the government is banning the app because it’s terrible for our youth, nor is that the reason the government is banning it. Perhaps I missed it, but I didn’t see anyone call on the government to ban it for that reason, so I am unsure of your point.
The title of this thread is “TikTok Ban…” The point is being terrible for youth is not a good reason for a TikTok ban, nor was it the reason given.
So the ban is not happening for that reason, and nobody is suggesting that it should. But if the govt did ban it for that reason, it would be bad. Gotcha.
Interesting that people are flocking to the red note (or is it red book) app. I wonder if the CCP is collecting data on that app, also. Ironic to me that some are angered by losing the freedom to use TikTok, while flocking to an app that restricts everything you say. Better not say anything bad about Chinese leaders or the Chinese government. God forbid you mention anything LGBTQ or wear revealing clothes. Freedom of expression? I think not.
I didn’t say it was. But I would probably not allow my children to have TikTok until they were no longer children. It’s by far the worst of the social medias in my opinion.
Just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean it should be banned. That’s not democratic. Your morals should not define laws and the laws should not define your morals.
Obviously extreme things are exceptions.
I was just telling my daughter that scrolling TikTok comments tonight was like attending a funeral. “Im going to miss [content creator’s name] sooo much! You brought so much joy to my life”. Etc. etc…. Most creators are urging followers to go to insta or YouTube.
I scroll through TikTok several times a day. My 27 y/o daughter and I send things back and forth all the time. They’re primarily food related - she planned a Mother’s Day dumpling crawl in NY based solely on TT recommendations - or when they contain local locations We often send each other the same item when we don’t look at our inboxes for a while.
We were discussing where to go next. For those who mentioned RedNote, she told me when se looked into moving there everything she saw was written in Chinese. I can’t imagine that’s any safer for “national security”.
I have the app but don’t go on it regularly, so I don’t think I’ll miss it. Any TikTokers whose content I was interested in (mostly recipes & travel) has directed their followers elsewhere.
I did however get on last night, thinking it might be my last chance. Before I knew it, an hour of my time was gone, and I was influenced to buy two beauty items! So no, I won’t miss it
Just curious - with food and stupid dances like my daughter used to do - what exactly are the Chinese stealing ?
I know they’ve hacked Mr Trump and the government.
Not sure the big deal here specifically.
I am ok if the people I follow post all their content on Instagram. But many are going to YouTube and I just find YouTube to be cumbersome. Too much clicking. Longer videos. I like the small doses.
I went through all the people I follow on TT and tried to find them on Instagram yesterday. Many, but not all. And some are also saying they will leave Instagram eventually for point of view reasons.
There is a lot more than that on there now. Political content, organizing, health including mental health, lgbtq issues, etc.
I hope you’re not meaning that most of those are a threat!
Those are everyday life for many/most people!
Not at all! I was commenting on the prior post on what data the chinese could be harvesting and use later for nefarious purposes. Also I am concerned about billionaires harvesting and using this same sort of info for nefarious purposes
I’m afraid this is very much a “cat’s outta the bag” situation
Thx. I wasn’t sure. It seems everything, including our government, is hacked.
I get the Chinese own this.
Since so many millions use this - why not prevent government business from being discussed?
Than it wouldn’t matter if they stole someone’s recipe.
And what will China’s reaction be ? Will they kick Microsoft and Apple out of the country ?
It’s interesting. It sounds like Mr Trump will try and get around it.
There’s going to be lots of unhappy citizens of this is gone.
I listened to some of the SC hearing on this. It sounded like the main US government concern was that China could be harvesting all this data on millions of young Americans who will soon be in the workforce, many in sensitive positions. They could then use this information to turn some of them willingly, or unwillingly, into sources for Chinese intelligence.
Ahhhhhhh. Crazy but nothing surprises today.
Crazy thing is, Meta has been selling that info to the Chinese for years!
