Time and Cost

How much would you be in debt if you went through the college, med school and a anesthesiology residency be? Not at a top school but a still a good school? Also how long would it take to complete? How difficult would it be finish?

Quality of school is not necessarily correlated with expense.

Without knowing financial aid status, no predictions are possible.

Even including that, expense varies widely from school to school.

It would take approximately 4+4+3 years, or eleven post-high-school years. Many people finish between the ages of 29 and 32.

Difficulty depends on the schools in question – harder schools are harder but make the next steps easier, for example – as well as your own innate sense of what “hard” and “easy” mean as well as your own natural talent in whatever fields you enter.

Anesthesia is only three years for residency? I thought it was four or five.

1.) I’m not sure, now that I think about it. I always thought it was just three, which was much of the appeal of the specialty.

2.) Residencies do vary; in particular some academic centers are now building in research years to add to the clinical years so that they’re a little bit longer.

Anesthesia training includes intern year (PGY-1) and anesthesia residency (PGY-2 through PGY-4, sometimes called CA-1 through CA-3 years). The vast majority of anesthesia residents complete this training in four years. Some programs retain residents as CA-4’s to function as chief residents.

Here is an editorial that advocates expanding research training: http://www.anesthesiology.org/pt/re/anes/fulltext.00000542-200609000-00005.htm;jsessionid=GypZf9g6MLHzyjQcPwrdbVVQh5zKlxQGWhrGFBTpXTKjqKg10B61!-1851260294!181195628!8091!-1</a></p>

Fellowship training in research, cardiac, pain, critical care, ob, or peds anesthesia adds one or more years.
