Time for a condo report...

Because I am visiting NYC and when I visit NYC I like to pretend I may buy one. (I won’t). But I can dream? Right?

http://docs.streeteasy.com/market_reports/StreetEasy_August_2014_Manhattan_Condo_Market_Report.pdf?_ga=1.5758839.537018858.1412800808</a></p>

The prices are insane. (I think).

I do find it amusing when I read threads and posters say they will never live in a condo and then I look at NYC condo prices. :slight_smile: One of my kids lives in and loves NYC. I love NYC too but…

Man, that even puts DC to shame. A lot of DC condos list for the $300-600k range, with rowhouses easily in the 750k-1.5mil range.

Soccergurl7988,

Maybe I can convince my son to move to DC. :)

My brother has a one bedroom condo on the market for 1.6 mill.

Oldfort, Wow! Going to have to pass. :)

Don’t you worry more about income inequality if you live in NYC?

Is buying a walk up a no-no even if you are in your 20’s?

The only place I could afford would be Chinatown. Maybe.

I didn’t look long enough to see what monthly assessments/condo fees (or whatever they call them there) are.

DrGoogle, you are such a trouble maker.

In fact, that’s what I was doing right now. Sitting on the beach in Hawaii, drinking a Longboard beer, and worrying about income inequality.

Have been looking at real estate in the SF area. Makes NYC look comparatively reasonable.

Cost of Living SF vs NYC
<a href=“Cost of Living Comparison Between New York, NY, United States And San Francisco, CA, United States”>Cost of Living Comparison Between New York, NY, United States And San Francisco, CA, United States;

Manhattan itself is more expensive than SF.

Yikes! Where can the regular folks live? There has to be some regular people working in the stores, schools, etc. Where do they live?

They commute. Pretty far sometimes or they have two jobs. Or they live with roommates. Or they live in small quarters.

We may be having a bubble in SF. Lots of companies don’t make money.

There are lots of well paid people here. A lot of their money goes to housing.

Lucky San Francisco has a Bart and NYC has a subway. Otherwise they’d have nobody in the service industry.

That table shows some housing higher in NY and some in SF. And only shows
‘’ apt’’ which is limited as SF has houses as well, which differ from NYC’s brownstones.

And these articles ALL show housing in SF to be more expensive

<a href=“San Francisco, California is 4% cheaper than New York City. Jan 2024 Cost of Living.”>http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/comparison/new-york-city/san-francisco</a></p>

<a href=“San Francisco Is More Expensive Than New York City”>San Francisco Is More Expensive Than New York City;

Articles all show higher housing costs in San Francisco (can’t do the quotation thing easily on the ipad)

@dstark The huge problems in DC, at least for 20 and 30 somethings, are saving for the down payment and the competitiveness for lower-priced properties in good neighborhoods. Very difficult to live on your own (1BRs go for the $1600s-2500s here) and still save a good chunk of your take-home for a DP. Most people in their late 20s that I know who have bought have had to go way out to the suburbs, which is a miserable commute if you actually work inside the beltway.

It sucks.

Bus, I try to help because I know this subject is dear to Op.

There’s a big disparity with renting vs buying in NYC. The traditional path is to rent with a group of friends when you are in early 20s => get married & rent something smaller => most to Brooklyn when you have kids => move to Jersey when they are ready to start school. The average 3/4br house in my town can be had for $450k and it’s a 35 minute train ride to NY Penn, which can be shorter than a commute from Brooklyn if you work in midtown.

Soccergurl7988, Yeah…I think it is very difficult for young people today. I agree it sucks. I dont know what my kids are going to do…,

Manhattan itself may be expensive like some area in SF like Tiburon but may not be the whole NYC. I’m guessing.
