I love that Michelle’s mother will be at the White House. More than anything it reflects the reality of parenthood in the age of today’s working couples and that the Obama’s have their eyes firmly on the parenting ball. Who took care of Chelsea?

I didn’t know she was going with them. Cool. Love seeing the extended family closely involved.

With over 130 rooms, I’m sure the White House will be able to accomodate the mother-in-law.

I thought I read somewhere that the MIL would keep her home in Chicago when she moves to DC. I would think she would like her own home in DC so when she wasn’t needed to help with the girls, she could have a place of her own. Maybe that is why she is keeping her home in Chicago; also so when Obama is no longer in the White House, she can move back home among friends.

Poor Obama, he’ll have to be satisfied winning arguments with congress, because he’s never going to win one at home.

Better in the White House than in my house.

I love my MIL but I’m glad she lives in her own house a few miles away. Of course, the White House is a large place. I’m sure President-Elect Obama will have plenty of room to spread out and find a quiet space if he suffers from any familial overload.

It is very nice for Michelle’s mom to essentially give up her private life to live in the WH. I assume there will be heavy security on her. Don’t know if there are other grandkids, but it would be hard to go to the mall to buy their Christmas presents, etc. Wonder what someone like a MIL does about meals? She probably wouldn’t want to eat every meal with the family.

I remember seeing an interview with her months ago, in which she clearly was reluctant to consider leaving her life in Chicago. But she said that she would go to DC if Michelle needed her.

I believe that there are other grandkids, but I think they are older. And they probably live on the west coast - didn’t Michelle’s brother take a job in Oregon recently? And before that, I think he was at Brown, so it does not sound like they have been living in Chicago.

Actually, the family quarters in the WH are surprising small though I don’t remember the square footage.

Here is the floor plan -

I think it looks terrific - there is room for a pool table in the Central Hall!

I can see the girls taking the east and west bedrooms and Michelle’s mom in the Queens bedroom. I think it’s lovely.

Coach Robinson is the head basketball coach at Oregon State Univ.

They also have a lot of the third floor at their disposal, as well.
It’s very nice of the MIL to come along.

I think the MIL plans to keep her home but visit to help out frequently. I can’t see any downside to having grandma in the White House, at least until the girls get settled.

In the interview that the Obamas gave on 60 Minutes this week, they said that the decision about where Michelle’s mother would live, if she, in fact, does move to D.C., hadn’t been made yet. They were leaving that decision up to her. As he said to Steve Kroft, " I don’t know about you, but I don’t tell my mother-in-law what to do."

I think an apartment nearby would be a good option for her.

I think a seperate apartment within the white house would be best. Otherwise you have to deal with transportation.

But again, this really should be just up to them.
