How hard would it be to be involved in multiple extracurricular activities at Carleton, like say a student symphony, an a cappella group, some community service group, and an intramural sport? Would I have time to do all of these things, or do some of them require too much time? Thanks!

I’d say that the biggest time-sinks i.e. ones that are near-exclusive of other activities are plays/musicals. Other than that, I know lots of people (and was one of them) who did a large number of extra-curriculars at the same time. Carleton students are notoriously overcommitted to anything and everything. Sure, there are people who aren’t, but it very possible to do a ton of different things. Just realize that there are finite hours in the day, and you’ll be taking some intense classes. For me, sleep was sacrificed to the tune of four (sometimes six) hours a night senior year. Everyone will find their own balance.

I would recommend starting out completely and utterly overcommitted then keeping only the ones about which you really passionate. Never be afraid to try something new or weird you many never get the chance. The things I did on a whim (synchronized swimming, radio, triathalon, moustache club, admissions) were just as rewarding as the things I wanted to do coming in (frisbee, academic quiz team, water polo).
