time for everything?

How hard would it be to be involved in multiple extracurricular activities at Carleton, like say a student symphony, an a cappella group, some community service group, and an intramural sport? Would I have time to do all of these things, or do some of them require too much time? Thanks!

I’d say that the biggest time-sinks — i.e. ones that are near-exclusive of other activities — are plays/musicals. Other than that, I know lots of people (and was one of them) who did a large number of extra-curriculars at the same time. Carleton students are notoriously overcommitted to anything and everything. Sure, there are people who aren’t, but it very possible to do a ton of different things. Just realize that there are finite hours in the day, and you’ll be taking some intense classes. For me, sleep was sacrificed — to the tune of four (sometimes six) hours a night senior year. Everyone will find their own balance.

I would recommend starting out completely and utterly overcommitted then keeping only the ones about which you really passionate. Never be afraid to try something new or weird — you many never get the chance. The things I did on a whim (synchronized swimming, radio, triathalon, moustache club, admissions) were just as rewarding as the things I wanted to do coming in (frisbee, academic quiz team, water polo).
