Tinnitus

Does anyone else suffer with this? It’s pronounced TIN-uh-tus, by the way. I’ve had it for about a year now. Very high-pitched ringing. All. The. Time. I had my hearing tested and it’s fine. I bought a noise machine that helps a little at night. I guess there’s not much else I can do about it. :frowning: It’s kind of depressing that I may have to put up with this for the rest of my life.

Yep… I have otosclerosis, though, which is a calcification of the stapes bones. Thus, I have a binaural conductive hearing loss–corrected more or less with hearing aids. I’ve had it since I was 18, along with the tinnitus that goes with it. I’ve gotten used to it, and it’s almost soothing in that it’s just the noise I hear when i don’t have my aids in. The weird thing for me is when it changes pitch–that can freak me out. But the normal high pitched ringing in my ears is just a part of me…

Yes, for about 20 years now. I made a decision early on to just ignore it and NOT to become anxious about it.
There is research that shows that the sound of water relieves the experience.
Next time you are near a fountain stop and decide if it soothes you.

I’ve had it for about 12 yrs due to a benign tumor that was treated. Mine is slight ringing, mostly white noise. I now hear it if I think about it, but tune it out most of the time. Fortunately, does not stop me from sleeping.

I think I’ve had it for quite a while. At this point I don’t know if what I hear is normal or tinnitus. .

I really should have my hearing tested

I’ve had it for 25 years, caused by an antibiotic I received when I was in labor with my first son. I brought home a new baby and a really annoying case of tinnitus.

Music helps me cope. If it is too quiet and the ringing is driving me nuts, I put on some soft music to help mask the nonexistent noise in my head.

Yep and sometimes it gets rather loud and annoying. I wish there was a solution for it.

My family rolls their eyes when I ask them to turn something up because I can’t hear it over the ringing in my ears. They think I’m going deaf but that’s not it at all.

Yes, mine is white noise, so not that irritating. Once in awhile it changes to the high pitched sound, which is weird. I’m sorry it is bothering you, it’s the strangest thing. I don’t notice mine most of the time. I do remember so clearly when I didn’t have it and the lovely silence.

My husband has always had it, sometimes it’s worse than others. He discovered that a little cortison cream on a q-tip in the ear has helped it. He also wears a hearing aid when it’s particularly bad.

I have had it for at least 10 years. It’s there all the time but as soon as I think about it, it seems to get worse (like right now!).

Another known cause is high blood pressure. I have that too but it is under control with meds. My tinnitus started before high blood pressure was diagnosed so I wonder if that was the original cause and now I am stuck with the constant ringing.

My H finds that caffeine worsens it but if he works st limiting his caffeine intake to 1 cup of coffee, it’s a bit better. He’s had it for many decades and has mostly made peace with it. He says when I mention crickets chirping that tinnitus sounds like that 24/7.

My dad has an extremely bad case of tinnitus so I hope yours does not progress. We have to be very careful around him to not be too loud or it will go to an almost unmanageable level. His is so bad it can make him depressed and he is currently taking 2 Valium a day to deal with it. He is going to try a new med soon to see if he improves but I have my doubts. He is 83 and feels dying will be a relief from this curse. So sad.

Yes to having tinnitus. I have had it ever since I suffered a cerebral hemorrhage years ago. It is more of a high pitched white noise. I have learned to tune it out most of the time except when it is really quiet. I have just learned to live with it. Sorry you are suffering from this.

Thanks for all of your posts! I will try the suggestions. It’s not as bad today as it was yesterday. I think my case is probably due to Lexapro, an anti-anxiety med I started taking after we lost my nephew in 2015. Ironic, because it’s causing me more anxiety now! My doctor let me wean myself off it slowly and I stopped taking it altogether last week. I was hoping the ringing might go away, but it hasn’t.

I’ve had it for 20 years now. It mostly bothers me when I shut my eyes to go to sleep, but using a sound soother machine seems to help. In my case, loud noises males it worse, such as lawn mowers, wearing earbuds. and listening to music, and the bright light seems to bother me too.
I did buy some ear drops that seemed to work a bit, They sell it a the drug store. I just forgot to buy more and have been dealing with it. But maybe try the drops and see if works. It’s worth a $10 bottle to see if reduces your symptoms.

it does suck dealing with it, but there are other worse things people deal with all of the time, so I just roll with it.

I just saw this a few days ago:

DH developed tinnitus over the past year. He’s a dentist, so listening to the drill doesn’t help. He finds loud noise to be an issue, as well as noisy environments. For now, he’s just living with it and doesn’t complain too much.

I’ve had ringing in my ears for as long as I remember. It’s just louder now. It doesn’t bother me very much and I don’t really notice it unless I concentrate on the ringing.

My husband has it. He had had good results from a doctor in LA who provides a sound generating device. The basic idea is that the brain determines how loud a sound “seems” based on whether is is paying attention to it. We naturally don’t pay attention to many background sounds. There is also a bit of psychological training along with the device. The doctor said that his perceived sound level was getting louder because he was focused on listening to it too much. (He does not have a known biological reason like antibiotics or damage for his tinnitus.) He still has tinnitus, but he doesn’t panic about it as much.
