Tinted Car Windows

OK, here’s another random thread looking for info from the all-knowing CC’ers…

We just bought a car in Florida for our daughter (2004 Honda Civic). It’s a great car, and amazingly, we got it licensed here in NC with only ONE trip to the DMV!!! We took it to our local place to get it inspected, and generally checked out to see if we got scammed or not. It passed state (and overall systems checking) inspection. However, when H picked it up, the guy said that it “shouldn’t” have passed the state inspection because it has tinted windows on the sides (don’t remember if the back also is tinted or not). Since they already gave it the “pass” sticker, he said that we’d need to remove the front seat window tinting before next year’s inspection.

I looked at the NC law—it says that at least 35% of light must pass through for it to be legal. Um…how do you measure that?

Anyone had experience with removing tinting on the windows? It looks like it was professionally done, and it doesn’t look like film that would easily peel off. Hmm???

It’s easily peelable with a one sided razor blade and a squirt bottle of water. But you need to be very careful around the electric rear window defrosters if the car so equipped.

After you peel it off, get some stuff call “Goo Gone Automotive” to get the residual sticky stuff off. It works great. S had to get rid of the tint so his truck would pass inspection.
