Right. IMO, and it’s only a few moving companies I’ve known through the eyes of an employee, the movers really, in general, don’t care about how they do the job except that it pays their bills and supports their families. If that offends you, they’ll be the first to invite you to move your own stuff, risk your bones for fractures, wreck your back.

There’s no law that says only professional movers can move your stuff around. Have at it, they’d say.

The company that employed my son was particularly proud of its customer service and manners. This made it doubly disappointing to the crew to receive low salaries, do a great job with politeness and intelligent care, and then not get tipped at the end of a day, or tipped at the level of $10 apiece or somesuch, as if they’d delivered a stack of pizzas or given one taxicab ride to an airport.

When we moved 7 years ago (a local move) we tipped each mover $60 (I think there were 4?) and also provided them with donuts, lunch and soft drinks.

We’ve moved many times–mostly UHaul. Two professional moves and I never heard/thought about tipping movers! I honestly thought I was paying for the job.

About 8 years ago, so adjust for the times, I tipped $50 each to movers for about 4 hours of unloading to my house. They appeared appreciative and surprised. This was cash handed to each person with a handshake and smile, and a wish for a good lunch break.
In general, I don’t like the tipping thing, but tip with love to company employees and try to anticipate the need in advance with cash. Lots of people work really hard and I sure do appreciate their labors.

We’ve moved PLENTY of times. My husband’s company always pays the full cost, so we never tip; we figure they’ve covered that in the bid. We do open the fridge and freezer when they arrive: “Help yourselves to anything…”

We had a lot of stuff to move this time, practically filled the 600 sqft garage and a 3000 sqft house. 6 movers showed up and it took them a whole day and two trucks to move us 25 miles away. I tipped them $300 and they seemed happy.
