Tipping Movers

What is a good amount? There are four packers at our house for two days, then everything will be loaded in one day. 4,000 SF house worth of stuff that moving company will park someplace for a day before driving 200 miles and unloading at our new house. While we’re not moving across the country, the crew does have to spend one night (maybe two) on the road.

I can’t remember what we have done in the past, but I seem to recall tipping the driver before he drove off with our stuff (don’t think we tip packers/workers.) Suggestions are appreciated for amount.

There was an earlier thread on this, I think about a year ago. You might want to search for it.

Edit: Here it is! I forgot that I actually started it.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1237299-tipping-movers.html?highlight=tip+movers

Are you sure the same crew is unloading? We had an unfamiliar driver and a local crew on the delivery side but we moved 600 miles. After 2 days of loading we were very pleased with everyone and handed out $20s to everyone. They seemed happy enough.

Interesting that in the previous thread, some people posted that they never tipped the movers.

I always did. Back then it was around $20 per person per day but that was several years ago. I suspect I’d have to up that to probably $30 now.

Plus I always offer to treat them to pizza and a soda.

Just ask the movers if they will be the same crew to unpack. Our movers made it very clear that they would be unpacking us and that they were so happy when people tipped. I think I tipped everyone on the crew $70 apiece.

They packed for 2 days drove to our new city, stayed overnight and unpacked the next. I knew where they stayed what there per diem was and that their wives made them food so they didn’t have to buy food. I don’t remember if I bought them pizza on the days they packed. I probably should have but I think they brought their own food.

This is definitely tipable event. If you are going to reward someone for carrying a chicken parm from the window to your table or for correctly pouring a cup of coffee how much more consideration should someone get for carrying your 200lb motion recliner up a couple of flights of stairs. Especially when there is no ac on yet in the new place and the fans are packed somewhere.

I’d go $20 per. If you have some really hairy items that they had to finesse in, I double it for those guys.

Wow, I guess I over tipped! Now I don’t feel bad if I forgot to buy them pizza. But my kids were caddies when they were young. I figured if they got $20 for carrying a bag 18 holes, I would tip the movers more. They hauled a lot of stuff.

I think you tipped correctly if they packed for 2 days and drove out of town and stayed overnight. My D and her H moved last summer within the city (1BR and no packing and unpacking) and each mover was tipped $40 plus drinks. It also depends on the COL at your location.

Thanks for the responses. Same crew on both ends. We are actually unpacking the boxes ourselves although the crew will of course carry everything in the new house.

I thought I heard somewhere that one should tip the driver for the whole crew, and leave it up to him to dole out as he sees fit.

I could probably ask the owner of the moving company if there is a rule of thumb.

FWIW the total cost of our move is $6,795. In case I should go by percentage.

We just had movers deliver and unload furniture that we are storing for someone else. It took them about two and a half hours. The total cost of the move (which we didn’t pay for obviously) was about 4200 dollars. We tipped the guys (3 of them) a hundred dollars to split. They seemed pretty happy with that and were headed to cracker barrel to spend some of it on lunch. I wondered if that was too much or too little, but it seemed like a fair amount to us.
