tips for a taxi driver who drives you in winter conditions

DS had a taxi ride (but not a short distance ride) from the airport to his school. The driver drove very carefully and very slowly due to the snow storm condition in NE now.

The regular fare is $110. How much tips do you think will be the proper amount?

Thanks!

PS If I had a chance to persuade DS, I would strongly suggest him to stay overnight at a hotel. But he found a brave driver at the airport to brave this. How dangerous is it to drive on I -91 (southern section, toward the coast) now?

I’m thinking it’s not that bad. I live south/west of 91 and the roads earlier were wet but not slippery. Now, after dark, maybe a little slippier. There is not that much snow. I assume he landed at BDL and is headed to Wesleyan or Yale?

I’m thinking that the normal tip would be $20 ish … so I might go to $30…

ETA: just read an online article that the roads are getting suddenly much worse. However, they do not reference accidents on 91 – I also have the thought that the normal fare may not apply as the driver will be going more slowly and therefore the meter will be higher. So giving $20 over the 15% from the meter would be generous in my opinion.

Driving on 91 is always a nightmare…but it’s one of the roads first tended to, so your son would certainly be safe. I’d be very, very generous in my tip - if you can afford a $110 taxi ride then you can certainly tip a driver who is willing to do several hours in bad weather.

cnp55 and stradmom,

Thank you for your help. Having been living in the sunny south mostly, I naturally tend to be paranoid when I heard DS was on the road in such a severe weather condition.

I heard he had arrived at his destination. He was traveling from BDL to New Haven. It took more than twice as long time as it would take if no such a weather condition. DS really appreciated that the driver drove him safely to his destination. I heard he gave the driver $40 as tips due to this unusual situation.
(Hopefully the driver also gave him some real life winter driving “lessons” while they were in the car together for almost 2.5 hrs. He will need such skills pretty soon.)

Thanks again.
