For next summer (after my Junior Year), I’m very interested in SSP at Jackson Labs. Combination of beautiful location with a fascination in genetics/medical engineering plus the stipend make it very attractive to me. Besides having stellar grades/scores, what is crucial to being accepted? It’s my understanding that it’s extremely competitive. Or is it a crapshoot? How do I stand out without having had a research internship already?
To a lesser extent I’m interested in SIP at NIH, which I got rejected from for this summer. How does one obtain an SIP internship at the NIH? How do you grab the attention of researchers as a high school student? People have told me that getting an internship at the NIH is all about connections, which I don’t currently have and I hope isn’t true. I also applied for a Craig Venter internship and also did not get accepted, though I guess I’m a rising Junior and they say they prefer rising Seniors. I would love to see the stats or hear the advice of people who have been accepted into these programs. Thanks!
