I have read different advice for cleaning cherry (or any wood, for that matter) cabinets. I am not sure who/what to believe. CC parents, you are an intelligent bunch. Your tips? (Oh, and I can’t hire someone-lol-because I have two kids in college!) :)

Wow, this is a well timed post.
I just made the mistake of looking at my kitchen cabinets and realized how much they are in need of a cleaning. We also have 2 kids in college so I’ll be doing my own pre-Thanksgiving cleaning and would also appreciate cleaning tips.

I think the first step is to detemine if the cabinets are finished with an acrylic coating (as most pre-fab ones from big cabinet companies are.) Or, if they are handmade/custom made they might have been just finished with wax, which has probably worn off.

If acrylic, you can use a soap and water based cleaner to remove the grease, grime and finger prints (Murphy’s oil is nice, not too strong). Spray, scrub stubborn grease with a soft cloth, wipe dry with a clean cloth.

If custom/wax finished, use an oil based, good quality furniture cleaner available from the hardware store (most grocery store types are pretty mediocre.) These will have a mineral spirit or turpentine base (ventilate well). Apply, rub dirt off, wipe dry with a clean cloth. Wax with a high-quality non-silicone based wax.

The holiday fun begins!

We started using Pledge on our cabinets, but noticed streaking. Mild soap and water seems to work best. Cherry cabinets seem to show every little speck of food.

I use Murphy’s Oil Soap and it makes my cherry cabinets look like new.

How much do you dilute the Murphy’s oil?
