What are some tips to determining which schools on a list have the best research opportunities in their major?
I would search the college website. At least for our college, you can search “research opportunity major” and it will show all of the research being done.
Look at professor pages in areas of interest
I surmise you will find solid opportunities at most schools - but you do need to ask/put yourself out there. Some profs or schools send out emails. I suspect less overall do or are interested then we see on this website.
It’s a very focused audience here.
I would do some research on the professors. I agree that most schools have opportunities and my daughter sent emails and knocked on doors (profs were very receptive).
Schools also send emails.
Consider the availability of for-credit faculty-mentored research courses. Ideally, you will see these listed as part of the formal curriculum and as being available to underclassmen. Courses of this type may culminate in senior research or senior thesis classes, which may extend across two semesters.
