tips for future RISD freshman

Hey everyone I thought it would be awesome if RISD students shared tips/advice for the incoming freshman.

Post under the actual school heading and you may get more answers: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rhode-island-school-design/

My D1 was accepted and finalizing her decision re RISD & we’d be interested in what others have to say on this topic too.

Thank you I hope I get to meet your daughter this fall and congratulations on her acceptance

Thanks @Stripperella - she’s still deciding…one more accepted college visit and hopefully D1 will finalize her decision this week (cuz I can’t take this any longer!!) Also D1’s been on the accepted students’ 2020 facebook page. Altho like all artists, the other kids work made her nervous.

Hey! Have either or both of your children decided on RISD? My D2 just committed this past weekend.

My main tip is probably to take up biking this summer. You’re going to need strong legs to walk up and down the hill.

Yep, she FINALLY decided yesterday and I’m sending in the paperwork today. Yay!!! I’m really psyched because from the beginning this was her dream school and I thought the best fit for her. All her other choices had great things going for them, but this ticked all the boxes. Also my brother runs a lab at Brown so I like having family there (& we can be lazy and have a place to stay too!)

So congrats too @BrooklynRye & feel free to DM me if you’d like to connect via email or FB

Hi there, RISD alum here, congrats to your daughter on her acceptance. My tips are - do take some classes at Brown at some point during your RISD career (not the first year, but shoot for the 2nd year). Take advantage of all the activities on campus such as film previews and visiting artists - and get in line early for anything free at the auditorium as the locals know the schedule and will fill it up quickly. If you are not used to urban life, look both ways before your cross Angel Street!

Oh, and take advantage of the Museum, Nature Lab, and Library. Also, have a thick skin for critiques. Some people get worried about crits, but that’s what you’re there for - to bounce ideas off other artists. it’s one of the best things about RISD, so be really open to meeting people and sharing ideas.
