Tips for packing apartment for year-long storage

Kid is getting set to go abroad for a year, and will be packing up his apartment and leaving some things in storage. He thought about just getting rid of everything - he has been in his one-bedroom apartment for just two years - but he has some items of furniture that are decent quality and that he likes. He figures that the cost of putting things in storage is about the same as it would cost to replace things when he returns, and I think he is probably correct.

I am wondering, especially for those of you who have stored things for a long period of time, are there any special tricks or tips you can pass along? Cedar blocks in the boxes with bedding is really the only thing I can think of. Maybe mattress covers? Or wrapping the mattresses in plastic wrap?
