I live in the northeast where it gets plenty cold. And I walk outside a lot. I have never used hand or toe warmers…except when skiing. Honestly, I think that is overkill.
Just dress warmly. And keep moving.

I’ve used them skiing and they were a game-changer. I don’t think we’ll need them for this trip. Apparently it has been unseasonably warm. My dreams of cross-country skiing in the Carleton Arb are going to have to be deferred.
Yep, hand warmers are for skiing and snowmobiling.
Ha. My philosophy on hand warmers and skiing is: if it’s cold enough for hand warmers, it’s too cold to ski. I hate them. But if you’re from California and walking around outside in 20-degree weather, then maybe.
When you only get to ski once a year, and the travel arrangements are all booked, you ski no matter what!
I think if you’re from California, have Raynaud’s, and shelled out for two days of lift tickets at Alta, handwarmers are the bomb.
Fair enough. I am fortunate to live in Denver, so I can bail on a ski weekend and reschedule if need be.
I just bought heated ski mittens, I can choose when they’re heated!
Which mittens did you get? I had considered those (I prefer mittens to gloves as they keep my fingers warmer).
The Hestra toaster mittens - they often put them on sale online at the Warming Store! I also have boot heaters and a heated vest - I’m probably going to turn into a ball of flames one day as I ski down Beaver Creek!
It was -9 degrees when we toured St. Olaf. The guide was lovely about taking us inside as much as possible. We were coming from CA and my D did not. remember to bring mittens/gloves and they were sold out at the local Target.
That said, it was one of our best tours and a truly lovely school.
Hope her jacket or coat had pockets!
Glad it was a great tour!
We got 6 inches of snow here in the MSP metro. So it will now look like winter for you! 19 degrees currently.
We will be in St. Olaf this weekend and it appears it will be unseasonably warm. I was really wanting this visit to be a test of mid-west winter but alas, it won’t be much colder than home.
Maybe we’ll see you there!
My husband and daughter touched down in Minneapolis about three hours ago. They’re currently on the campus of UMN and WOWed by the snow and the size (in a good way). No complaints about cold yet! I will report more once their visit is done.
You should wear something to recognize each other. Maybe pin an unpopped bag of popcorn to your coats?
(to fit in with the Minnesotans)
Yeah, like half the people will look like that. So you may still need the popcorn . . . .
