Tips for visiting from SoCal?

Hello all:

I was lucky enough to be admitted to two of the reach private schools I applied to on the east coast, Penn and Johns Hopkins. I never thought I would get in to any of those schools, so I never considered visiting. I live all the way in the Inland Empire of Southern California.

Round trip plane flights for two from LAX to Baltimore or Philadelphia are quite high, as is lodging at a decent hotel nearby either. Any ideas on how I should go about visiting both of these schools?

I already have Monday 4/22 off, so I was hoping to be able to visit around this day to minimize school absences. Penn has its admit days on 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, and 4/23. Hopkins seems to have one going on almost every single weekday in April, can that be correct? I would like to be able to attend both, and perhaps sit in on a class at Penn. How do you guys recommend going about doing all of this? We were thinking of flying out Friday 4/19 and coming back around 4/23. Anyone else make similar long treks to visit these schools?

Another consideration I had is about how many other times will I have to come before actually starting school if I decide to attend. Each trip is pricey and my dad has a busy job so it’s hard for us to be able to visit many times. While I hope I’d be able to visit before I SIR anywhere, I realize this may not be feasible if I’d have to come several times in the summer for orientation and the like.

TL;DR: Where should I fly into to visit both Penn and Hopkins? Where should I stay? When should all this happen? We’re looking at a bill of well over $1200, just to visit! Should I just bite the bullet and decide where I SIR without visiting?

I liked being able to visit all the UCs I was accepted to (except Berkeley which is a bit much) in a day each by car. :P
