Tips on Pulling Through

Hey guys I’m retaking the SAT soon and I really want to pull through. I have the potential to do well; I really do. I have some weak spots though.

Critical Reading: Stuck in the low to mid 700’s range!

Math: I get stuck on weird problems. (Ex. If a rectangle inscribed the circle has an area of 36, how many more rectangles can you draw?$

Writing: I’m so confused about the essay. I’m trying to write in a more creative fashion, using first person and my creative writing skills to my advantage but I’m getting low scores!

Please help me guys. I’m desperate. The SAT literally has brought me to tears on numerous occasions because I felt like it shredded my dreams.

CR Advice:

 • Don’t overinterpret things. I find myself doing this at times. Take everything at face value assume you don’t have the time to look any deeper.
 • Vocab advice: Brush up on your Latin/Greek roots, and read good literature.

I don’t feel qualified to give math advice. I think I need some myself, haha.

Writing Advice:
I always write my essays in third person. My SAT essays are 4 paragraphs - intro, 2x body, and conclusion. Only use personal examples if they specifically apply. Watch your grammar and spelling. Don’t double space (that’s the problem I had on my SAT - wrote 3/4 of the essay double spaced until I realized I was running out of room). If you don’t have personal examples, use literature/current events.

Advice for math: If you get those weird problems wrong consistently, go over every single practice question (assuming you’ve taken practice tests) that was “weird” until you could do said problem in your sleep. And although the last math questions are kind of a toss up, still go over the old ones so you are acclimated with choosing (or even educated guessing) a right answer.

I wouldn’t try to be creative with the SAT essay. The Princeton Review person that came to our high school said the secret to good essay score is to write a long essay. There is no time to be creative.
