I’m loving this thread — just what I need this week.
I have a silly contribution to this thread.
I received a clothing item in the mail that came with no tags. Except for some cryptic pictorial instructions for washing on the bag it came in and this. “Do not rinse, iron, dry clean, Spak and wash the clothes separately.”
Lot of head scratching about how I was supposed to wash this thing without rinsing and WTH did they mean by spak? So I decided to type the instructions in a text to a friend to get her take on it.
Autocorrect, which usually does me no favors, came to my rescue as I typed suggesting the correct word for the misspelt one and solved my mystery — I would’ve never guessed what they meant! ?♀️ Doesn’t speak well for my cognitive abilities! I’m sure most of you would immediately guess the right word so I won’t say it here.
@AnAsmom I could cheat and do what you did (type in the instructions) but for fun, I’ll stab a guess…spank?
@conmama I think we are simply… old! There was a time, not too far past, that I would not give my D’s art, floor space - well, guess who’s blushing now? She has sold a number of her pieces and has been commissioned to create dustcover art!
I had a nice distance (with masks) visit with a coworker yesterday. He works in accounting with me, but used to be a road bike racer and has a side business in his garage working on bikes. D2 (who has been staying with us during Covid) decided she would like to ride my old geared bike which has been hanging in the garage for about 7 years. I took the bike to my coworkers house yesterday and he gave it a tune up in his garage while I stood outside and we chatted. It really lifted my spirits to see him and to get to do something normal! He said the bike will be good for 7 to 10 mile rides D2 plans to do for exercise. Since my coworker likes to drink Mezcal D2 is going to get a bottle for him for fixing the bike.
In general I’ve been comfortable with life as it goes nowadays but this was a low week. It started Sunday morning with a call from a friend to tell me her adult son had been found dead in his apartment the night before, possible overdose of unknown reason. She was waiting for her daughter to fly in and was alone; asked me to let our group of friends know. I’ve never dealt with a situation like that and tried hard to provide support and comfort. Very hard thinking of her pain and not being there in person.
And now I’m worried about my blood pressure. I’m just started taking an alternate pill since my prescription service can’t get the usual one. My doctor asked me to track for a couple of weeks; I have a home cuff. So after tracking the last two weeks on the old pill and six days on the new, my conclusions are the new pill doesn’t seem to cause any changes but (1) my blood pressure is too high ongoing and (2) about half the time my arms have a bigger difference in both numbers than they should. So something new to worry about.
Not usually a Debbie Downer and I usually snap out of it but tricky this time. I am so lucky in my normal life and I know I know I know I should make some significant lifestyle changes in exercise and diet.
Instead of hanging over the fence chatting, I should be out walking. If only my feet could hold up better.
I would have thought I would have quilted a lot more the last few months but I have ended up doing a lot less! First I started with the new grandbaby March 3 that lived with us for four months. Then I had so many orders from family for masks that took all my sewing time. Then work asked me to mentor a college freshman for a month through a program they have and I have a student I’m tutoring in Cal II that is taking it in a 5 week class. I have tutored everything through Cal I for years but haven’t touched Cal II in about 30 years! It has taken a lot of time! Of course, then there is work …
I have been using my creative time to scrapbook my new grandson!
I think this thread is more my jam. Literally, the last full page of posts at Sinner’s referenced alcohol in each post - again, that’s fine, it’s just not of interest to me.
Lots of rambling = lots of posts. Weren’t “we” complaining of not enough activity here?
Rambling- I am thrilled that I’ve harvested several Serrano chili’s from my plant. I gave up on gardening several years ago as between my clay soil, gophers and coastal summer fog I never had much luck. I planted two Serrano pepper plants in containers near my pool and they are producing peppers. Sad but true this makes me happy.
On the complaining side my refrigerator of over 30 years has been declared to have reached the end of its life. It’s a 48 inch built in KitchenAid which costs a astronomical amount to replace. After spending a small fortune to replace they can’t deliver till 2nd week of September. Lucky I have an even older refrigerator in my garage.
OK, I took an Aleve and went on a neighborhood walk to my favorite ocean overlook. It was only 1.6 miles round trip, but took over half an hour and included lots of steep elevation changes (my phone thinks I climbed three flights of stairs).
But the best part (and maybe I should post this on the Sinners Alley thread) was a lawn sign:
Yes to Hops
Pliny the Elder
President 2020
Now, we’ve only lived in San Diego since 2015, but I was pretty sure there was no Pliny in local politics, and I had certainly learned about the Roman somewhere in a classical history seminar. So I searched online and lo and behold, it’s an IPA. But named to honor the actual Pliny the Elder: https://russianriverbrewing.com/pliny-the-elder/?age-verified=d85e26ad48
@abasket - I always enjoy the view but it was an overcast day, so I’ve seen better, to quote La La Land. There’s great landscaping and flowers along the route.
I do still have the Wii Fit and get on it every now and then for light step aerobics. Tomorrow I will do a beach walk while husband has PT, then maybe by Friday the weather will improve enough for pool laps. I’ve done more of that than ever before.
my DH has lost weight during covid. good for him. ive been sitting way too much . . . need to get out.
my S20 left out a grad card “to my dear grandson” - it was a Joke card from a good friend from 2019. I seriously felt chills reading it. It was sweet and encouraging and thanking him for friendship and memories. there are so many things that make me grouchy; reading this just made me feel happy and I’ll think about that tonight as all the downer stuff is on the news . as a mom, that’s a really nice thing to think about. Boys writing their feelings.
@1214mom nope. Not a biggie bday. That is true. I guess I did well for his 50th. I got him $$$ private 2 hour tour of his favorite museum/historic home. A bit better than an avenger’s face mask.
I’ve been in the dumps. This time of year is always hard. H hates being stuck at home in the summers and it wears on me. I pray he goes into school to work some next week just to see people. It feels like we are in a tomb. It’s too hot to do anything and you can’t even go anywhere.
But I was talking to a fav co-worker in a different department this afternoon… And holy cow… I may not see eye to eye with my big boss on mask wearing, but at least I like him as a person. He is reasonable most of the time. I’m glad I don’t work in that department. Anyway, it was nice having a vent session with one of the few people in my building who believes in masks!
And tomorrow we get to go to the big city for a bit, so there’s that. (Thinking about which songs about “tomorrow” would be most appropriate.)
@ClassicMom98 Today is my birthday; I indulged myself by purchasing a bespoke mask from an Etsy crafter, LOL! Its a sad statement when we start thinking about masks as gifts!
I had the one eye for near, one eye for distance contacts for about 10 years. Last year I switched to multi focal. My optometrist said that some people love multi focals but most people can’t get used to them. I’m in the love them camp. Much easier for me to see in.
Although with this stay at home year, I’m having trouble with any contacts being comfortable. It’s a me thing, I can only wear contacts comfortably when I’m out.
