Hello,
My question is simple. I go to a small, private, Catholic high school in Arlington Heights, IL. I have never taken a film class simply because I have never attended a school that offered one. I have done everything I can, outside of school, to learn what I could, for example, filmed football games and made highlight reels, competed in Samsung Mobile Fresh Films and also interned at a small production company over the summer. My question is this, do you think my chances are slim because I go to a private, catholic, college prep school that has no film classes? Like would I look bad next to an applicant who took film classes all through high school?

Thanks guys! your input means a lot, I’m freaking out about hearing from them on the 15th. This is my dream school and ahhh I’m just so scared!

I am not on the admission committee, but I give you A LOT of credit for obtaining all the wonderful film opportunities outside of something that is already built in and structured for you via available school curriculum.

It shows your initiative and personal passion for film studies (carved out for yourself). I hope you emphasized this in your essay so it highlighted your strengths in this regard.

I give you a lot of credit, even more so than, say, for people self studying for AP courses which are not offered in their schools. This is based on the variety and quality of the work described.

GL! To me, you already have been “successful” based on your ability to adapt and create your own learning, in the absence of available “hand holding”! Too bad I’m not on the Admission committee at NYU. :)

Everything I’ve heard from the admissions committee is that they don’t compare applicants to each other, but compare an applicant’s courses and experiences against those that were available to them. I.e. They wouldn’t count a lack of film class experience against you because they’ll be able to see that they weren’t offered. They won’t hold that against you. It’s amazing that you’ve taken so much initiative on your own, and I’m sure they’ll take that into account. But another thing I’ve heard is that they don’t really care about experience in Tisch…your audition/portfolio is pretty much all they consider in terms of accepting you to your prospective major. If you have the type of creativity/vision that they’re looking for and that is portrayed well in your submission, then you should be in They understand that there aren’t a lot of opportunities out there for a lot of people, and that you’re applying to their school in order to obtain that experience, so they’re just looking to see if you have enough potential to be taught the mastery of the craft. And from the sounds of it, you probably do good luck!

NYU is looking for kids that made the most of the opportunities they had. I go to a high school with film classes, so they would expect me to take them, but they dont expect someone who couldnt take film classes to have taken them. Im pretty sure all they care about is that your storytelling abilities are up to par. Theoretically, your chances might be a little bit lower than someone who has had class experience simply because they might be more experienced, but the simple fact that you havent taken classes will not affect you at all.

I applied to tisch ED for film as well. Good luck! Hopefully we will see each other there in September.
