Tisch MFA Film and Television?

I was curious if I could get my bachelor in Cinema Studies at the University of Washington and still be able to receive my MFA in film and television at NYU. I’m not quite ready to leave home and I have four years of college paid off already, but only if it is in state. I really want to take advantage of that, and I still dream of getting my masters degree from NYU. There is no film and television major at UW, otherwise I would take it for sure. I know that Ang Lee acquired his bachelors degree in Theater from UIUC and then his masters degree in Film and television from Tisch. I didn’t know where to find out if I could do the same with the Cinema Studies major (I all think that major would prepare me well for my own work). Additionally out of curiosity, if it is possible for me to do this, how difficult is it to get into Tisch’s graduate program without a BFA in Film and Television? Also, what are the differences in scholarship/financial aid opportunities when going to grad school? Thanks!

“I also* think that major would prepare me well for my own work.”

My understanding is that the majority of people who apply to MFA programs for Film at NYU and other schools do NOT have a BFA in film and it is not a prerequisite to applying. However a creative portfolio is. See the link for the Portfolio requirements for the NYU/Tisch MFA in Filmmaking. http://gradfilm.tisch.nyu.edu/object/grad_filmPort.html

I would suggest you take courses in creative writing and, if you really want to be a filmmaker, start filming. You don’t need to wait till you get to Graduate school. If film is your passion, just do it. I’m sure there will be other students in you college interested in film. Experience is the best teacher. Also, look for internships associated with film and television both during the summer, and even during the school year, if your schedule allows.

I will definitely beginning film on my own time before going to school for it, sorry i didn’t make that clear enough. My main goal in this is to gain more experience and become more comfortable with a camera prior to film school. Thank you!

My understanding is that Tisch specifically doesn’t wan’t people who have undergrad degrees in film to be in their grad program. They want people with life experience.
