Indeed  Did I ever tell you how she’s my idol? She’s the only famous person who I still hold in high esteem since 4th grade.

True, but they could have made it sound more authentic? We all know that most underprivileged Indians do not speak that way. In an industry that’s obsessed with authenticity and realism(e.g. like the usual skepticism that comes when casting an American actor in a quintessentially British role or vice versa), it’s strange that they would overlook this. It’s like it was completely forgotten somewhere between everyone ooh-ing and aah-ing over the abject poverty (a gross generalization I know, but it’s quite true from my interactions with a lot of people here).
Oh, Rahman’s first CWG song was terrible. The revision was marginally better. He was under tremendous pressure of course, everyone expected him to come up with something as brilliant as Maa Tujhe Salaam. I can’t help but feel his material’s getting progressively worse.

Robot music wasn’t anything great either. I think the last Rehman album that I loved was Ravanan. The music for that John Abraham starer good at all. Very forgettable.

Okay…this is going to be long

FREE FROM BOARDS!!! FINALLY WOOHOOO…I guess that was my reaction when my maths paper was over. A week has gone and I am getting tired of doing nothing. I was planning on controlling my weight issues, but my determination kinda goes out of window when I see food. In my defense, chocolate is liked by almost all the girls and Coke has been my life since I was 10.

I have been spending time playing Dragon Age: Origins ever since the exams were over. I watched My Name is Khan 2 times, Jane tu…Ya jaane na 3 times, Tees maar khan once, Princess diaries (I m going to kill my sister for making me watch that!) 5 times, Prince of Persia 3 times…and well other movies. I started watching a teenage Vamp drama on Star one. Overall, typical boring life. sigh And I have to spend next 3-4 months same way.

Now on the above…movies. Well I am not a fan of Slumdog Millionaire. My reaction to it was neutral. I agree with aniruddh, The oscars are for those movies which seem to worship the whites. I mean, Peepli Live and My name is Khan were really good entries for oscars. I searched the whole nimination list, and both of them couldn’t make it. I was like ‘***! This…is so stupid!’ There were other good movies in past that could have won at least one category in oscars. And although A.R. Rehman is not ‘crap’, Jai ho did disappoint me a little. I rather like his older compositions, like in Dil se and Rang de basanti.

But, that thing Danny Boyle depicted is the truth. I dont know about mumbai slums, but stuff like acid in eyes and others do happen. This is all part of trafficking business. And it is not as unbelievable as selling a nine year old girl for money into trafficking, or the condition in Charbagh (Lucknow) where women are ready to spend night with dudes just for earning a little food. India is full of bad…surprises for lack of better word.

^We all agree/know that it happens, meghna. No issues on that.

Nice to see you back!
How is the Canada uni stuff going? Watching any good anime recently?
You have to tell me how Fairytale is. What’s the storyline? Is it more of a romance thingy or is it more of combat?

EDIT: for weight issues, meghna, have you thought of swimming? I think gymming is really pointless, but swimming should be a fun way to lose weight?

If you’re interested Pixie, I got a 7+ on my French paper. And full points on two sections of the marking criteria. So thank you for the inspiration :D

Hehe, no problem.
It’s my speciality.
jk. Good work on that score!

The tags on this thread are well, something.

Hey pixie…
Canada stuff just went down the drain for this year, no thanks to the U.P. State govt. and its corrupted ways. My only way of financing the education is notwithstanding. sigh hopefully I will apply next year. I am thinking of giving SATs again, just for more options as far as Uni are concerned.

Fairytail does have romance, but they are not over the top obvious about it…only slight hints of the pairings. Its more like bleach and dbz, just fit in a lead character almost as obnoxious as Naruto in between. I am still debating whether I should start watching Nura: Last of Yokai clan (or something), but due to its slightly creepy theme, I am still undecided. The good news is, Maid sama! is finally in english, but I am far ahead in manga series.

Fairytail is story set in middle age like background, with people in modern attire (XD another similarity with Naruto series). The main characters are Lucy heartfilia, Natsu dragneel, Grey fullbuster and Erza scarlet, and a small cat named Happy. Lucy is from a real rich family, but she is avoided by her money hogger of a father. Her mother passed away when she was young. So lucy ran away from home. She started collecting certain special keys which possess power to summon the zodiac(Aquarius, cancer, etc.) and celestial spirits(Lyra, horologium, etc.), thus making her one of the celestial mages(which are rare, there aren’t many keys. Throughout the series, only one other such mage was revealed from Lucy’s time line. Rest died before her…)

In the fairytail world, the mages have divided themselves in various guilds, and Lucy wished to join one in which her idol mage Mirajane was, fairytail. She gets a chance to do that when she meets Natsu and Happy, who saved her from being wooed by a man who claimed to be a Firedragon slayer Salamander(Dragonslayers are stronger than normal mages. They possess the qualities of the dragons they are associated with). That man caught up with Lucy again, and this time, he fooled her by saying he was from Fairytail, and wanted her to meet her in a party hosted by him in a cruise ship. As it turned out he was a slave trader, and was going to sell lucy, along with some other girls. Again, Natsu comes to rescue her. Unfortunately, Natsu gets sick on ships, and could do nothing except getting beaten up. Happy meanwhile flies(Aaah yes he is a cat with wings) with lucy. But lucy refuses to leave Natsu, and decides to help by summoning Aquarius(remember the keys?). Aquarius sends a powerful water wave towards the ship, knocking it towards the land. With no water beneath his feet, Natsu is well again. He shocks everyone by telling that he is the Actual Firedragon slayer Salamander, and he is a member of Fairytail. He defeats all the bad guys, destroying a good part of city. When he realizes that the city authorities are behind him, he grabs Lucy and Happy, and makes a run for it. He also brings lucy to make her a member of fairytail. There she meets Grey, an ice mage who by the way looks like Sasuke, but is as loud as Naruto. His bad habit: He never wears full clothes, his shirt is always absent. XD and Erza is a weapon mage… she is counted amongst the strongest mages. She is stoic, impatient, proud, and seems perfect. But she has a clumsy and slightly funny side to her. Amongst the 5, she is currently the strongest, although Natsu might soon catch up to her. The story carries on as Lucy discovers the magic world. So u can say that Natsu and Lucy are main protagonists.

I am thinking of swimming. I did that in 7th grade. Sadly, the school swimming pool isn’t well maintained, so I am thinking of joining sports complex. Lets see what happens. :)

Long reply…hope u dont sleep thru it… XD

uhh yea…the tags for this forum are…Interesting… >.<

Hey Meghna!

Wow. I really appreciate you writing that reply. It must have taken you quite some time to write it. Of course I wouldn’t sleep through it, how could I?!
Thanks a lot for that explanation, I think that’s one of the best explanations I’ve gotten of an anime series.
I agree with what you said, Japanese anime does try to keep the romance part minimal isn’t it? I hear Korean anime/manga has romance as the main focus. Have you tried any?

I like the sound of Erza. She sounds similar to Sesshoumaru in Inuyasha!
I think I might give Fairytale a try. I’m also thinking of starting with FMA (Full Metal Alchemist), which is something I’ve been thinking for the past 6 months.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the explanation, it was a real pleasure reading it! :)

It’s easy to make out that you really know your stuff in anime, did you ever try writing an essay about anime in college admissions? If you are serious about that gap year, then you might want to give it a try! Adcoms love unconventional essays, one of my friends here wrote on cockroaches, and I wrote on Harry Potter in one of my essays. It doesn’t have to be only about anime throughout, you can start with that and later relate it to something else. For example, my HP essay went on to talk about something completely different and meaningful in detail, and I think that it turned out okayish…

Are you sure about taking that gap year? If you are, then I could help you out with suggesting some ways to get some ECs in Delhi.

I am taking this gap year…seriously. And I would love to get some good suggestions on ECs. I hope the problem is resolved next year…else I will have no other option than going for PG.

Erza…I wouldn’t compare her with Sesshomaru. She is more like a combo of Rukia (from bleach), Tenten and Temari (From Naruto). I might as well add U-chan from Fruits basket. I am thinking for watching FMA too… I have watched a couple of its episodes, and I had fun.

I actually thought about writing essay on these stuff, but I thought that it would not be…u know…academic-like. that is why I dropped the idea. But if u say it might work, I will give it a shot. thanks.

And someone wrote essay on COCKROACHES? Seriously? feels sick I hate everything that crawls. The other day I saw a lizard in kitchen sink, and I just couldn’t go further from kitchen door. My sister was laughing so hard, I usually don’t get scared…but a lizard drew me to edge. I think I even screamed that day shudders

I thought Bleach was extremely violent? :S
I love sesshoumaru. He reminds me of myself, and well, I love anything related to myself.
j/k.
I think in Delhi it is easy to join an NGO. It is especially easy to join one of those NGOs that run for teaching destitute kids. They are always looking for more volunteers. I think Aniruddhc was part of one during senior year, we could ask him for more info. You could also go check out some blind school organizations.
One of my mom’s friends had offered to let me intern with an NGO that was under the UN over the summer last year. But the place was in Nizamuddin, so I couldn’t work it out, too far. I could check if the offer is still open, she said that the job was easy, and that they are always looking for more people. In fact, this is a very good idea. Lemmi know if you want me to check.

I distinctly remember that one of your ECs in the city you lived in before you came to Delhi was helping out with the kids at some Ashram? You could try doing that here, Delhi has various places where you might help out. I remember that Sharda Mission in Hauz Khas is one…I used to take Sanskrit shloka classes there, but that was long ago.

If it is possible, try to get a good internship related to some of your other ECs through contacts (I think it is next to impossible for an out-of- school kid to get an internship by just going and asking for one… in fact, I don’t think any exist , they are all created if you have the right contacts).

You should focus on getting certificates from recognized organizations. It’s sometimes really easy to get them, for example, if you like animals, I heard that if you spend some hours at Select Citywalk Mall in Saket helping with the dogs there (the dogs are on sale by PETA), then PETA gives you a proper certificate for your work. You can get PETA’s number from JustDial or any other telephone number service.
With PETA, you could proceed to even more stuff related to welfare of unfortunate animals.

You could also think of joining NSD (National School of Drama) over the summer. Classes take place on payment and they have centers at various locations across the city.

Oh and don’t worry about essays not being academics related. None of mine are, and they aren’t expecting you to write about academics. You have to stand out! Which means, every single portion of your application should be unique. Each of your essays should be word perfect, the resume the best you can do, and everything should fall together. When adcoms drop the whole pile of applications on the floor, they should be able to pick your essay out of the pile and say, “this one is meghna’s essay”. That’s the only way to stand out in college admissions. It’s a rat race.

So my eyes just glazed over the anime bit. Sorry guys, anime appreciation is lost on me, although I had a brief fascination with attempting to draw manga once in the not-so-distant past.
Yea, that essay on cockroaches must’ve been something else. But yes, like Pixie said, academics is SO not the only thing they want to see on an essay. Far from! I could never write about my academics in my essays, its not like they don’t get enough of that from your transcript, your reco’s and so on! That’s what I love about US college essays, there’s so much more flexibility to express yourself beyond the two-dimensional world of numbers and ECs. US essays demand serious introspection and experimentation to find your ‘voice’, should you have a desire to stand out from the pile.

Obviously if academics have had a significant impact on your life that you want to talk about, then of course you can write about that. I hope that was implicit.

I spent the year of 2010 thinking more than I ever thought in my life combined. Like I said long long ago, I basically thought the year away. Gives me a headache to think how much I thought last year.
I thought all the time…all the frickin time, including while talking on the phone to my best friend.

I think I will just send some of the stuff I wrote for my blog, but never posted it (meh! I m too lazy) I have written pretty much on random stuff, but since they are ‘inspiration-struck’ essays, they are much better than all the other things I write.

I think I will join the Delhi branch of Sahaj marg, and may be go for NGOs. NSD doesn’t sound bad either…hmm…thanks pix…u know u r a lifesaver!

^Good idea.
And no problem!

Err pix, bleach has violence…but only as much as Naruto has…it is an amazing anime actually. Romance is there, but only a little bit. If you follow the series through, you will find it has its moments of humor too.

Lol arun, I have been trying to make manga characters for ages. I really couldn’t do that. The only time I have yielded good results in drawing was when I was studying for boards. I used to just let my mind and pen wander off and viola!! An amazing manga character ready! To tell the truth, I have never scored above a ‘D’ in Art (which was compulsory till 8th grade). I would have scored an ‘F’, but I used to give my craft projects to my sis who loves cutting and folding paper. So the craft projects always turned out to be good. :D

Hey pix, why don’t you try reading fanfictions? And btw, which unis did u get acceptances to? I have not been following this thread for a while so I really dun know.

And yea, I have tried Hanhwa/manhua (Korean and chinese comic series respectively…they dont use term ‘MANGA’ for them). And their focus is either war, or romance. And even in romances, they have to bodily harm someone, introduce a gangster, and get the male/female protagonists beaten by them. Heck, sometimes the gang leader and the street ‘bhai’ as we call it turns out to be the hero. And names are sooo confusing… I remember I couldn’t discern once whether the name ‘Sam Yang woo’ was the girl’s, the guy’s, or the guy’s friend…lol. But still, they do have a good plot sometimes.

You must congratulate pixie on getting into Harvard, Princeton and UPenn, Meghna :)

…blink blink * Thud *

comes back to consciousness

OMG Pix REALLY??? Wow thats so cool!! congratz!!! :)
