On what basis is the extent of our knowledge confined in a number between 600-2400 or on a scale ranging up to a 5.0? With these numbers imprinted on our foreheads, colleges then make their subjective decisions. Now, yes, some claim they are holistic in their admission process but how many of us would feel that they would have been granted admission with the ease of 200-300 more SAT points or a slightly higher GPA. As students we have been trained since we were learning to gather up the pieces of what life supposedly is; trained to study, work hard, and ultimately be successful in the end. Of course being children we never wrapped our heads around the “end” and never grasped the concept of what the future holds. We are soldiers trained to fight, dogs trained to fetch, and birds trained to fly. Over the past 12 years we committed our main intent on our education and persevered through week after week, exam after exam to be notified by the words “we regret to inform you… We cannot offer you admission”. We have been left behind for the students who have had better statistics and not a trace of who we are or what we do will ever matter. Our so called assessment of knowledge has become the indicator of our work ethic, willingness to persevere and commit. The only hinderance in gaining knowledge is the measure of knowledge we already have.
