Prospective major: electrical engineering
*Spent all my time fresh. and soph. year working out and practicing for basketball, but I had to quit when I got a job as a junior b.c. we needed the extra money (my mom dated a conman who ran up tens of thousands of debt on her credit card)… worked 16 hrs. a week during the school year last year and 32 hours a week in the summer
will try to work this into my essay along with how my dad walked out on me at 11 and I’ve been morally supporting my mother like an adult ever since and how we had to go to a local charity and get free food for a little while and how I fell down three times in basketball tryouts and got up and made the team

So will I get into the BERK?
PREDICTIONS ENSUE!

Not sure if you specified, maybe I didn’t find it; are you a California resident?
The stats/course load/test scores look pretty good. And when you say 99/95 averages, is that like, grade-wise, like 95% to 99%? Because if it is…ummm…that’s friggin incredible?
And I don’t know if this sounds mean, but the story was really interesting and I can really see you being able to write a unique personal statement about how that shaped you and everything :)

Well I’m a Texas resident…
But for 95.1 U.W. average, I mean that when you take all my grades together from high school and average them, it is a 95.1
The 99.3 W. average means that extra points were added for the advanced classes.

For engineering and out of states, your stats are on the weaker side. I’d say that the odds of acceptance are against you.

If you were applying undeclaraed/any major in the college of Letters & Science, you would have a pretty good shot, as you GPA is good, your SAT is above that 2100 mark, and unless you bomb your subject SATs, you seem like a qualified candidate . However, since you are applying for electrical engineering, your pretty good stats are no longer that great, given the rigour of Berkeley’s engineering programs (I’m not an engineering major, so I’m not an expert or anything) But then again, Berkeley is accepting more out-of-state students this year due to the budget crisis, so the odds may be in your favor. You’re definitely not a for-sure-no applicant, but I’d say you’re probably on the weaker side (unless you change your prospective major to something else).
