To call police or not

A coach at a local high school declined to call police when a player was jumped ( and knocked unconscious) although he did take the player home ( & his parent called police).

[Second Student Attacked at Rainier Beach After School Officials Failed to Call 911 for First Attack | Slog](http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/10/03/second-student-attacked-at-rainier-beach-after-school-officials-fail-to-call-911)

This school has had issues for years with violence and with staff not calling police but rather referring to their own security staff with incidents like a handicapped student being raped in the bathroom after school. While the district has replaced the principal, ( for other reasons & years later) it’s clear that the school still has problems with violence and that it is not clear what the obligations of staff should be.

The high school that my daughter attended was for a time using the track @ Rainier Beach for her team, because her school didn’t have one. However, after a few incidents her principal decided it was better to have the kids run on the street than continue to practice there.

The school despite special funding & programs is dramatically under enrolled & I think that incidents like this one just contribute to the problem.
I would hope that all district staff bend over backwards to make the schools a safe place for students and call for help when needed.

I believe that not calling the police to report a crime is a crime in and of itself.

I can’t understand the failure to contact police. I would think any bystander to an assault would use their cell phone and call 911.

Some people are hypothesizing that the coach knew the attackers and was trying to " protect" them.

I am a teacher, and in my state, I am a “mandated reporter” – I WILL lose my license to teach if it is found out I did not report an offense against a child, whether on school time/property or not. The mandated reporter statutes are in place 24/7. (At the risk of perpetuating a stereotype, kind of makes me leery of running into Walmart…).
