To Current NYU Students

Im a prospective transfer student, majoring in Journalism and hoping to get into the College of Arts and Sciences. Im having a really hard time with the question,"Please tell us about something you did last Sunday afternoon( or the Sunday before that…, or the Sunday before that…) I understand the question, I just dont understand what type of answer they want. What type of Sunday are they looking for because Ive had different Sundays? Thank you for your help and I wish NYU students the best this coming year.

I chose to write about a Sunday in which I was active in my community and my current major, Drama.

I know others who wrote about random Sunday’s that had no meaning, but they were humorous about it. I think the best thing is to try to write about a Sunday that gives insight into who you are (whether it be with your comments about the day or the events of the day itself) and why you fit with NYU.

I don’t think they want any specific “type of answer”…it’s just one of those completely random questions that helps them see who you are.

i wrote about going to this place where i used to live years ago, and how it was weird going back with changed perspective and all. i think it’s how you write it and not what you write really.

this is kinda off-topic, but something you should know nonetheless:

the journalism department changed their curriculum from fall 06 on. so unless you have journalism transfer credits, or are applying for the fall semester, you’re gonna have a tough time getting into any journalism courses. the reason being, the “gateway” course is only offered in the fall semester, and pretty much every other course in the department has it as a prerequisite. even then, you probably wouldn’t get in the class (i tried to myself, but it was closed out, which is a major bummer). i would apply for admission to the spring semester, that way you can register for it for the following fall.

and to answer your original question: i wrote about a sunday where i went to a college party. it was…interesting. honestly, just write what you want, like the previous posters said, they’re just looking for a way to get to know you.

As the other posts suggest, the question actually works in the student’s favor. It’s a clear opportunity to tell a story, any story that you think says something about you. It didn’t technically have to happen on sunday, or happen at all for that matter.

I wrote about a really thoughtful birthday prank my friends pulled on me, and how much I appreciated having those people in my life.

I am applying to Stern and I was also wondering what to write for that question. Sundays are the days that me and my husband always make sure we spend together doing something completely unwork/school related. I am not sure if that will help or hurt me but I guess that would be the honest answer.

I just wrote about making breakfast and reading the comics with my dad.

I described an actual sunday for me which involved a video shoot, homework, & a community theatre rehearsal.

Try not to write something that you think they’re looking for. They read thousands of these, and they’ll be able to see through applicants who are clearly thinking only about what the admissions office would want to hear. Just tell an interesting truth.

I wrote about how I was filming a campagin commercial for “Hillary Clinton” because our Gov. AP group was putting on a mock national convention in the school auditorium for the other government classes. this actually happened on the previous sunday, too :)

yea, mine actually happened on the previous sunday as well
