To Davis Students from an Incoming Freshman

Hi, I’m going to be attending UC Davis this fall as a freshman, and I have a few questions regarding classes.

My major is Biological Sciences, and I want to apply to a medical school after college.

I was just wondering if these classes that I’m planning to take are good for me:

Math17A
ASA2
CRD020
NPB012

Also, I’ve passed the AP Calculus B/C test with a 3, and the AP English Literature test with a 4.

Does that mean I’m exempt from taking Math17A and any college English course that is required for medical school?

No, you’re not exempt from either.

I’ve never taken an ASA class, but from what I’ve heard from friends, there’s a lot of reading/writing in those classes, so it might be a lot of work.

Wait, so if I’m not exempt from any classes due to passing the AP test, what was the point of taking them?

It seems math placement and advanced placement credit might be changing this year. You are probably going to have to ask. But it used to be…

[UC Davis General Catalog | College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examination Credit](http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/ucdwebcatalog/admission/ap.html)

that your ap stuff did count for something.

According to the catalog, you have to take ASA1 as a prerequisite before ASA2 this year.

The catalog for 10-12 is out:

[UC Davis General Catalog | General Catalog PDF Files](General Catalog - Welcome)

Starting on page 36 are listings talking about UC Davis AP credit. A three on Calc B/C gives you credit for Math 16A and allows you to take 16B.

If you decide to take Math 16A instead of 16B you have to take a placement test (!?) to make sure you are ready?.. Amazingly strange rules.

ah sorry, thought I read Calc AB, not BC. You can skip 17A.

in your case, given your AP score, i do not suggest skipping 17A. imho, the 17 series is a weeder course, and it was even hard for my friends who DID pull a 5 on the AP test (and they started from A).

also… you DO know you need to take 1 year of calc for med school… right? and a year of english? and that AP scores don’t count for those totals (well, for the majority of med schools, that is)?

Yeah, I was aware of that.

I just wanted to make sure in case I took an extra and unnecessary English/Math course.

But as for the humanities courses required for medical school, do my AP scores for history count toward it? Thus meaning that I don’t have to take any more history classes and my humanities requirement is fulfilled?

AP Scores:
AP European History-4
AP US History-5
AP Government and Politics-5
