To Droid or not to Droid...

Well, the final decision was…H got the Droid 2, I got a “plain” old phone w/no data plan. I’m sorry, I just cannot justify the extra monthly costs - I will be real curious how much H uses his “Features”. A part of me is jealous. I am sure we will all benefit some from it - if we are traveling, surely we will all borrow. I do have my Itouch for when we are in wireless places…but yeah, still a bit jealous!!!

I just got not a droid, but a blackberry torch. It is definitely taking some getting used to, even though I previously had a blackberry curve. I guess I have fat fingers or something. Been a tough day with the phone!

abasket,

I have corporate discounts with verizon… so when i originally got my plan, I could take a plan and get 20 percent off it and then pay to add on features (ie, text messaging) or i could take a plan that included all features and get 20 percent off it, but it was a higher priced plan. Well by the time i took 20 percent off a plan and then added texting on, it wound up being only 5 dollars more to take the all inclusive plan w/ the discount. so basically, I have an unlimited data plan included in with my plan… I never thought I’d use it… but i figured for 5 bucks i might as well take it, just in case… i do think i use it a bit more then i thought i would… I check the weather… I occasionally look up directions… ia lso occasionally check my facebook messages… i check my e-mail every once and awhile, i update my fantasy football team when I forget to do it at home, haha. I don’t even think they offer a plan like mine anymore. My sister has the original motarola droid, and i know she had to get that 20 dollar data plan for hers.

"Well, the final decision was…H got the Droid 2, I got a “plain” old phone w/no data plan. I’m sorry, I just cannot justify the extra monthly costs "

abasket, that sounds like a reasonable decision. I know the companies try to entice with 2-for-1 deals and such, but the monthly cost is a lot if you don’t know that you’ll use it. It makes sense to see how your H uses his. And if you are out together a lot, then two dataplans might be overkill anyway.

My H is contemplating new phone with data plan. It is and extra $20-$30/month, but I pointed out to him today that he would be able to take off the $10/month VZ-navigator charge.

Does the 2 for 1 deal work if only one of the lines is eligible for an upgrade? Two of my kids and I have the LG EnV and we all have problems with it. But only one line is eligible for an upgrade.

If I understand correctly, only one line needs to be eligible - but I’m not sure - both my husband and my phone were way past due. That’s a good question…

When DH asked last time, both had to eligible for the upgrade to get the special. Or you had to add a new line. That was Verizon.

I am inferring from the above that the Droid X does not have a slide out keyboard. Is that correct?

Droid 2 DOES have a slide out keyboard - but H just used the “speak” feature and didn’t even have to text - just spoke into it to send me a text. Yeah, I’m DEFINITELY jealous!!

Last Saturday, I was in the car with H, running errands. His phone rang (a dumb-phone) and when I picked it up (responsible, since he was driving), it was an automated message from a local car dealership’s parts department, saying that a part he had ordered was in and ready for pickup.

H: I should go get it. What time do they close?
Me: I don’t know, noon, maybe…
H: Call them back and ask them. Oh. Never mind, the callback number isn’t right since it was an automated call. I don’t know their number.
Me {speaking into my Incredible}: Call *** Audi, *** Connecticut.
My Incredible {on screen message}: Call the Parts Department?
Me {pressing button}: Call

Ring ring ring!!! It was…Incredible! Yeah Google Voice!!

Yes, both lines must be eligible for upgrade in order to BOGO. Just went through this when I upgraded to the Incredible. But I must say, the phone lives up to its name…I love being able to dictate text messages when I’m driving!

abasket, when I wanted the droid, H was not wanting to spend the extra $ on the data package. I gave him the sad face (he’s a sucker for the sad face), so he relented. At first he complained non-stop about the phone, but now he loves it. Email, web surfing, and “speak” to text, he’s a happy guy.

MY DH loved the voice command on his old blackberry-- he’s having some trouble with his new droid recognizing his voice command though

as an asideanyone know how to change the touchscreen sensitivity on a blackberry torch? tis driving me nuts

Re: dictating text messages. Did you know, that you can dictate a text message containg a calendar to Gvent (48368) and it will automatically put it on your Google calendar?

For example, text (can be keyed in or dictated) “Open House, November 27 7pm”…and it will text you back with the calendar event that it has set up for you.

Pretty handy.

I went to the Verizon store on Friday expecting to get a Droid X and left with the Samsung Fascinate. I am really enjoying it. At one point, I thought I wanted a Querty keyboard but listened to folks who told me that I wouldn’t choose it over the touchscreen. My goal is to master Swype.

cartera45 - At first my son found Swype a little frustrating. But he stuck with it and had gotten very fast. On the rare occassions that he responds immediately to my text messages, I’m surprised at how quickly he was able to swype in a long reply.

Love my Samsung Vibrant…my husband’s jealous of it because he said I pay more attention to it than I do to him…not true!!

JYM- Go to OPTIONS >Typing and Input > Track pad sensitivity

So glad to find this thread!

We have 3 phones long overdue for updates. Considering getting a Droid for my 10th grader. I think the trade off in the monthly data package price may be worth freeing up the laptop for me.

Can anyone give me an idea on monthly fee pricing? I can see the choices on Verizon, I just don’t know which package to choose because I am so slow with tech stuff. I think it would be used for e-mail, basic web surfing, music and text only.
