Both H and my phone are quite old. His screen is sorta of cracked/discolored and mine is starting to have charger and battery issues. Went to Verizon today. To my surprise, my not-so-techno H wants a Droid. He wants to learn how to use the features (apparently they have a class he can take).

I’m tentative about getting one (or two). The cost of the phones themselves is not an issue - we have a large credit and its BOGO - of course there is the data fee, which currently would be $20 for unlimited (per phone). I think that’s kind of ridiculous, but H is talking about covering the costs (mostly) by discontinuing our daily newspaper at home - that would help.

So…we were looking at the Droid 2 - tell me why I should or shouldn’t consider this model.

I am a big fan of the Android software. There are several companies that make different phones to chose from. If you get tired of one phone, there is always a new one coming out. The web experience with Android is excellent because they incorporate flash. If you like to watch a lot of videos, I would suggest also looking at the Droid X. It has a larger screen and gives and excellent viewing experience.

I have an Itouch so I’m hoping I might adjust a little easier to the technology. My H on the other hand, it SO not tech knowledgeable!!! But he’s been talking about having a “droid” for awhile…

I have a Droid Incredible and lovelovelove it. It’s so nice to have calendar, e-mail and everything else all in one place. It’s my first all-touchscreen and first smartphone and I’ve found the learning curve very small.

I’m with HGFM… I lovelovelove my droid. I am amongst the least tech savvy actually on the web and I have navigated the droid well and even have selected and use some apps! Both my son and my sister who “get” the smart phone technology and each had iphones prefer the droid. I will say that I have no music on my droid because that would mean having my phone with me on my walks and in the gym and that is something I don’t want.
I would love a thread on apps maybe there is one in the archives or I can start one after the ugly outlaws leave…ooops sorry wrong thread!

S2 just got a Droid by Motorola last month. It has a keyboard that slides out. He really likes it.
I’m super non-techie and have a dinosaur of a phone myself but have to say the the clarity of sound on the Droid is 10x better than his old Blackberry. Even when he uses speakerphone while talking to me, it is super clear. He bought a really heavy duty case to protect the investment since the Droid is his Christmas gift received in advance.

I couldn’t figure out if you wanted to get rid of H or the phone! :)

I tested about 5 different Droids for work (we are considering dumping Blackberry). I liked the Droid X the best, as did most of the other testers. I have a personal iPhone, but I would be very happy with a Droid if I had to have only 1 phone.

Hemmed and hawed all summer about whether or not to get a droid or wait for a Verizon iPhone. Got the Incredible in August…LOVE IT. Very easy to learn, lots of apps to choose from, very “customizable”. I was not sure how I would feel about not having a physical keyboard…but with autocorrect and word predictor it actually works great.

My ONLY complaint about the droid is battery life…I understand it’s a common complaint on that phone.

I just got my first smart phone. I went with the LG Ally (which is android based also). I love it. It is not too big, so still fits easily in women’s pant’s pockets. It has a slide out keyboard with keys you can feel. I just don’t do well texting on a screen. The applications I have downloaded so far have worked well.

The calendar is great and integrates with gmail so you can access it from you computer or phone. I even downloaded a book reader called Laputa for “emergency” reading times (like when you’re stuck with a wait you didn’t anticipate).

DD got the Droid before the Incredible came out. He got the keyboard because he could not imagine not having one. He never uses it. He uses the touch screen keyboard instead. Finds it much easier. He also moved from a regular old phone and loves the email and web features.

Justamom, There is an app called “Advanced Task Killer” (free) that seems to have helped my battery life. It basically shuts off programs not being used right then. Evidently (as explained to me by more savvy people), many programs will run constantly searching for updates, etc. This shuts them off every so often (you set the time period).

I’ve got the Nexus. I like the Droid software, I liked having a real keyboard better than the touchscreen keyboard. Use the maps, Pandora, and the Calendar all the time. It fits in my pockets.

I bought the Droid Incredible and keep it for 29 days and then returned it for the Samsung Fascinate (also uses the android system). While the Incredible had some features I liked better than the Fascinate, I thought the battery life was ridiculously short (yes, I had the app killer) and just couldn’t live with a phone that conked out about 7 pm every night.

I have been very, very satisfied with the fascinate. Battery much better ( I frequently go 2 days on a charge), beautiful screen and the Swype keyboard is 10 times easier to use than the Incredible. There are a few things I liked better on the Incredible but not enough to make me want to switch.

They are all good phones but they all have their pluses and minuses. I did a lot of research prior to getting the Incredible but failed to pick up on the battery life issue. Best thing to do is to spend a lot of time playing with the different phones in the store.

I had the Eris Droid and recently upgraded to the Samsung Fascinate. The Fascinate has great battery life and the screen is very much like an iphone. With Swype you don’t need a pull out keyboard and you can just speak what you want to text. The Fascinate also is a little smaller than the Moto Droids and for me is easier to hold.

mkm56, thanks…I’ve read mixed reviews on ATK, on the droid forums. There’s a big debate over there as to whether or not it helps or hurts. As long as I can get a full day out of my dInc, I’m happy. Before I switched from my dumb-phone (an enV), I could get several days from one charge. Just takes some getting used to.

We’re a Droid family here. One D has the Droid X and the other the Incredible, both are thrilled with their first smart phones. With Verizon’s Skype agreement, they call me internationally for free (well, as part of the obligatory data package). H and I have earlier Anroid 1.6 Tattoos. I use mine for everything from fm radio and mp3 player to gps and alarm clock. Of course they are also video cameras, agenda, notetaker, game player etc. As an old Palm user, I downloaded the Graffiti app so I can input writing with my finger rather than using the keyboard–works great.

Btw, Skype is now available for download for any 2.x Droid to use with wifi or any data plan, this revolutionizes international calling from a cell once its use becomes widespread.

My son loves his DroidX. At first he thought he’d want a keyboard, but he has gotten very good at the swipe text entry (there was a learning curve).

I think the main downside is the extra fee, plus the fact that we still need to do unlimited text (went to family plan)… I assumed kids getting email on phone (D has BB) would mean less text. But no, that’s the way teens communicate.

My S thinks the screen if vulnerable. He got a plastic shield.
