I am extremely determined to get into Mayo Medical School. What should I do to accomplish this? I am an incoming senior in high school (I know, very early to be thinking about med schools.) I will be applying to colleges soon, so I want to know if it matters what undergraduate college you attend. I understand that to many medical schools it doesn’t matter one bit, but to a school like Mayo with the lowest acceptance rate in the country (less than 1%) it might matter. Although my scores will allow me to gain admission to, I am not interested in attending colleges like, Johns Hopkins, MIT, or Duke, with some grade deflation, because if I don’t have the grades, then it doesn’t matter where I went to college. I want to go to Boston University or USC; but if it doesn’t matter what college you attend then I will attend UNebraska-Lincoln (4 miles away from me.)

Also, if it matters I would be a legacy applicant (my dad went there and is on faculty.)

First, Icarus is right. Aiming at 1 school is just plain stupid.
Second, no, you’re not an exception to the rule that your UG doesn’t matter.
Third, take a chill pill and actually go through college a bit before looking at med schools. Chances are, you won’t even end up finishing as a pre-med anyway, so don’t base your life around it.

The Mayo Clinic really likes to have in state students. If you are a Minnesotan resident your chances might be a bit higher. Not anything astronomical but if you wanna cover your bases…

Mayo Clinic’s stated philosophy is to focus on teaching, research, and practicing. That’s what their emblem’s three shields are. Well rounded academic physicians. Mind you, this is their stated philosophy. When I shadowed there it seemed to be pretty up to it though.
