To retake or drop?

Hi,

I am currently taking a intro class (level-2000) for one of my major concentrations. I really think I will do bad on the class (failed my first exam). The next exam is in 1 day and I am not prepared…and the material is hard to learn in just one day. This class is a prerequisite of another class I am taking.

Here are my options:

  1. drop the class and retake it next semester
  2. just pull through, get a bad grade, but still retake it…because my university takes the last retake grade as GPA consideration.

What does everyone think?

Are you still in the drop/add period for your school, so that you can switch it for another class? Or, at least, will it not show up as a W if you drop now?

It would help if we knew how many exams you had left. If it was the first of 5 exams that you failed, I’d say buckle down and get the help you need, and stop being so negative. But if it’s 1 of 2 exams…

Hi, I only have two exams and this exam is around 30%. The final is around 45. Rest is hw, which I didnt do too well on. If I drop now there is a W, but will it be more beneficial to me to just pull through even if I fail…and get retake it with a better grade. That shows that I dont give up easily…right? But it might hurt my GPA when I am looking for an internship…so I am debating. Thanks.

I would drop it. I don’t know what school you’re at, but I have a lot of friends here that are finding out that unless you ACTUALLY failed the class, you can’t replace the grade by retaking it. So they’ll have Ds still pulling their GPAs down, and they still need to retake the class to show they can do better. This might not be the case at your school, but I think to play it safe you’re best to drop it and get a W, then go back to it. One W won’t make or break your transcript, IMO.

I’d drop. Save your GPA and retake it next semester.

A W is better than an F.

What’s your school’s policy on grade replacement? If you’re able to replace the grade by retaking the course and getting a better grade, then I’d stick through it and just retake the course. If you have to fail the class to retake the course and get your grade replaced, then you could stick through it and get the grade waived when you retake the course. It really depends on the policy in place. However, if you retake the course and the previous grade stays on you transcript, drop the course by all means.

One W won’t hurt you. Do you want to put forth the effort for the rest of the semester just to retake the course? Do you just want to forget about it and free up the rest of your semester?

Our school completely removes the first grade and the GPA will only factor into the second grade

However the old grade will still show up on the transcript
