to retake or not to retake? + sat II questions

Hi, I have been lurking this board for some time but could not really find a definitive answer to this kind of question.

I am a junior (07) in high school. I took the November 5th SAT and got my scores back on the 21st. I earned a 740 on all three sections for a total score of only 2220, or an old 1480. I have a strong feeling that a 1480 would not get somebody into Yale last year and that a 2220 will not get somebody into Yale this year. My question is, if I am to retake it, should I go ahead and choose any month? I have heard that the curve is “easiest” in June, but this could easily be speculation.

Also, I am planning on taking the SAT II World History, US History, and Math IIc. Should I take a science SAT II just to be safe, or does Yale really have no preference as to which SAT II’s you decide to take?

They say that you should choose the SAT IIs that you feel you’ll score the best on.

007 represent!

Hey, I got a 2190. My M+CR is 1470, but I’m very lopsided.

Choose the month when you’ll be able to prepare most efficiently. Like I’m taking 6 APs in May, so it wouldn’t make sense for me to take it in April or May. Between January and June I choose January just because I want to do it as soon as possible. If I have to take it a third time I’ll have the option of June or October.

I agree with theoneo. The curve does not vary significantly enough to affect you THAT much.

Also, I am sure there were plenty of people who were admitted to Yale with a 1480. 2220 is a very respectable score. If you feel that 100 points improvement will seriously give the adcoms greater reason to admit you, then take the test again. But be proud of your 2220 score  Keep everything in perspective…

well, i looked at the score report

i missed two questions in math to get the 740… ouch!

I think the curve does affect things, at least as far as math is concerned.

First, I thought I’d like to point out that 1480/2220 are very respectable scores and plenty of people can get into Yale with scores like that as long as they have the “rest of the package”. A good rule of thumb is above 1400/2100.

The curve changes a little bit from month to month, but it’s hard to predict. Since you pointed out the math section, I’ll tell you that I missed 1 question in June for the math section and got a 790. So, maybe the June curve is better, I’m not sure. My reason for taking it in June though didn’t have anything to do with the curve.

As for SAT II’s, just take the ones in the subjects that you feel most confident in. Yale has no preference as to which ones you take.

is it ok if u fall below the cutoff by say 30 points…i man got like 1360/2070?u think that would put me in danger zone?

Icy
It all depend on what else you offer. It’s not going to disqualify you automatically, however, you will need to show something a little extra, a hook, to make yourself a very desireable candidate. I wouldn’t say you’re in the danger zone however, especially if you’re a urm, legacy, etc.
