Yale on its website strongly discourages students to submit an LOR apart from the two teacher and one counsellor recommendation.
But i wanted to submit a supplementary recommendation. I have been actively involved with a local NGO (1000+ hours) and the founder president thinks highly of me. Should I submit a recommendation written by him. This LOR mentions certain things that are already mentioned in other parts of my application but many things are not mentioned elsewhere.
What would you suggest?

Having just heard some sessions recently, a Yale area rep said that he wouldn’t mind reading a supplemental if it had something that really enhanced the picture of the applicant.

I guess the caveat would be to have this 3rd LOR contain anecdotes that are more than your 1st two.

I think this sounds like an appropriate 3rd LOR. What I think Yale doesn’t want is a third teacher who repeats what the first two have said. An extracurricular coach/teacher/mentor who has seen a different side of you would provide new info vs. rehashing the same stuff as the two “real” recommenders.

One questions–does the founder really know you and has he personally seen you in action? Having an “important person” does no good if that person doesn’t have substantive, substantial knowledge about you. It sounds like this person does, but I’d just make sure you’re not trying to play the power card.

^agree. Send it.

@admissionsaddict-
The founder knows me pretty well and we work together all the time. I am almost like a personal secretary to him:)

send it, no question

um, the Yale supplement on the common app gives you 3 blanks for letters of recommendation. so I assume that means that they’re allowing you to take advantage of it and use the space provided…
…at least that’s what I did

what does LOR stand for?

^Letters of recommendation

if you send a LOR from a instructor comes from the same “subject” as your supplementary materials (i.e. from an art/music/science research mentor, etc) will the admissions committee read it or will they forward it with your supplement?

because i feel mine will be more useful for the adcom as opposed to its respective department.

and OP, def send it!

fuzzyfirebunny, i think op means the 4th lor, but refers to it as the 3rd b/c s/he’s not including the lor from the counsellor

yup, Raphael is correct.
but if there are only 3 blanks for letters of recommendation on the common application (as fuzzyfirebunny mentions), how should i send this letter of recommendation i am talking about.

S sent optional letter of rec via snail mail hard copy to his colleges that permitted it.
