To Tech or To Mason? (School counseling)

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently been accepted into the masters programs at Virginia Tech and George Mason for school counseling (yay) and would like some feedback on who to go with. I’m leaning toward Tech write now because…

VT’s Counselor Education program is 15 more units than GMU’s and I would be getting double the amount of supervised experience.

VT’s program is accredited by CACREP and GMU isn’t.

VT is a bigger name.

If you would choose GMU, why?

Thanks in advance

Are there significant cost differences between the schools? Because it sounds like you really want Virginia Tech and you haven’t laid out any significant reasons why you shouldn’t, or any significant pros to GMU.

Why we would choose GMU is kind of irrelevant, right? Everyone has their own personal preferences and needs. It’s about choosing whatever program is best for you. You listed two good reasons to attend VT over GMU - double the supervised experience and the CACREP accreditation. You didn’t give any better reasons to attend GMU, so unless there’s something you’re hiding like a scholarship at GMU or something, I don’t see why you wouldn’t go to VT.

I’m concerned with the workload at Tech. In the first year, I would have to take 12 units for two semesters and 6 units for two summers, is this too much? At GMU I would only be taking 9 credits a semester.

The schedule is set in stone at Tech if I want to graduate in 2 years which is mandatory for me to receive graduate funding.
