To the photographers out there....

I am in the market for a new Digital Camera… I love photography but haven’t really been too into it recently…

Just a small point and shoot would be fine… something small that I can easily put in my purse. I’ve always been partial to Nikon’s but am open to any suggestions… I bought my current camera about 4 years ago… it’s a 7.1 mp Nikon Coolpix 7600… I love it’s small, compact size… but I don’t really like the way it’s evening -outdoors pictures come out… and I don’t like how long it takes for the flash to recharge after taking a picture… other then that, I love it… I’d like the camera to have an optical viewfinder, but it’s not completely necessary… I don’t want a touch screen… I’d like a camera that will focus on small distances… like if I wanted to take up close pictures of a flower or something of that nature… I currently use SD cards in my camera, so it would be nice if the new camera used them as well… that way I don’t have to buy new cards. Any suggestions?

Too many choices- I am almost driven back to film

I have a Canon 570is which is really slow
D has a Canon 1000 SD as well as a Nikon DSLR,
you probably want one that will change lenses, I bought my 570 for that reason but now I am having trouble finding a macro lens.

My Canon Powershot S3IS is probably bigger than you are looking for, although I do carry it in my handbag. It’s a strong performer in every way. I recommend checking Amazon for reviews.

I just wanted to mention a couple things: for the sake of your flash recharging, consider getting a camera that takes regular rechargeable batteries (e. g. AA or AAA) as they have become much more powerful and durable in the past few years (be sure to check the miniscule print for their rating) and can be economically upgraded as the technology continues to improve, and don’t limit yourself to SD format as the cost of memory has come way down in the past few years.

I am not a photographer, but I got this in an email from someone I know who is:

"Hey guys, Best Buy is having a deal on D200’s. This camera sold for 1800 a year ago, Photographer or Writer this is an excellent camera. I just ordered myself two, came to bout 640 shipping and tax.

Any D200 found under 1000 is a good deal, used ones don’t even seen for 600 this is a deal you can’t pass up"

So don’t ask me anything else about it but it seems like a good deal. :)

My kids have the Nikon Coolpix too and I love it.

I was at a work party last night. One of the woman had a Nikon Coolpix Touch. It was awesome. I saw an add for it today in our circulars. It has 10 megapixals (is that right), 3X zoom, 3 inch LCD. It had the slimmest width, easy to put in a pocket.
Check it out. I want one!!!

I love my Canon Powershot Digital Elph. It’s as small as you would want it to be, fitting into a pocket easily. It takes great photos, too.

I was actually looking at an elph… the pictures look great that i’ve seen. how is it during the evenings? like 7-9ish?

I’ve used it in all kinds of low light conditions and have been pleased with the results.

Wow. I just saw that if you choose to buy this camera in blue, you can get it for $149.00! That is truly a steal.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B0011ZK6PC/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0</a></p>

Not sure how this is different from the elph, though, on this page. (quite a price difference)
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B000EMWBT2</a></p>

Hard to go wrong with Canon, though.

My son and daughter both have the Canon PowerShot SD1100IS that Cronie mentions above. We bought one for my daughter for her birthday - and she liked it so much that her brother went out and bought one for himself. Both have taken thousands of pictures in all conditions and they turn out extremely well.

If I get an ELPH i’ll probably get one of the newer 10 or 12 MP ones. I have a 7.1 MP now so the 8 is pretty close.

For about the same price as the blue SD1100IS mentioned above, you may want to consider the Canon power shot A1000 IS. Just purchased one for my D who needed a new camera for study abroad this summer. A bit larger, but still quite small. Has the optical viewfinder, comes in colors if you like that, is well rated by the camera sites, EASY to use and has a bit better zoom that the SD1100 (4X as opposed to 3X). Went with this one for the above reasons as well as the fact that I prefer Canon products and it uses AA batteries, which I think is advantageous for travel. This camera is from 2008, there is an updated version, the Power Shot 1100IS (has the newer Canon processor, Digic 4), but I could not find it in my area and did not have time to order online!

[Amazon.com: Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Light Gray): Camera & Photo](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001SER48S/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&s=photo)

That one is the SD1200IS. Is that the one you were referring to? I was looking at that one… I was also comparing it to their SD890 IS as well… does anyone have experience with that one?

My only issue with canon’s was that I seem to remember them using like their own rechargable lithium batteries instead of rechargable AA’s… if I’m remembering that correctly?

Oh, and does anyone know what quality video these cameras record by any chance?

I was looking at the store today and I think I’ve settled on the Canon ELPH SD780 IS. It’s a 12.1 MP ELPH and it does HD video. It also seemed much smaller then the 12100IS that I was looking at… so that was a positive as well.

Great choice! You’ll have so much fun. These cameras are tiny, but amazingly versatile!

With the small DC size CCD, the MP number really does not matter that much. It actually could take you some time to load transfer your shots to the SD card. 12 MP is a lot of data.

Of all small DC, my personal favorite has been the panasonic DMC TZ series. Got DD a TZ3 and she loves it. The wide angle 16:9 etc. Might get DS a LX3 for his trip this summer.

Since fendergirl seems to have found what she is looking for, I hope she doesn’t mind if I piggyback on here…

I am looking for a very inexpensive, but decent and lightweight, digital camera as a little bonus graduation present for my son, who will be taking a trip to Europe shortly after college graduation next week. His only camera right now is one he salvaged from the end-of-school piles two years ago when he was an R.A. However, as we are helping pay for the Eurotrip, I can’t spend more than $100 for a camera–and must get it soon, as graduation is Saturday.

Any recommendations?
Thanks so much!

I haven’t used this camera, but it seems quite good from the Amazon reviews. Olympus makes a good quality camera, although I’m partial to Canon. I’d feel comfortable with Olympus, Canon or Nikon, rather than Kodak or some of the others. You’d want to get an extra picture card, or memory card, with this camera for a trip…probably you’d want an extra card with whatever camera you get.

[Nikon - Coolpix 8.0MP Digital Camera - Blue - S210](http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8740302&type=product&id=1202429848737)

Fabulous camera for the cost

All I can say is that all other things being equal, buy one that takes AA batteries rather than its own proprietary rechargeable batteries. I recently had to buy a new charger (for about half the cost of a camera) because the old one mysteriously disappeared.

I have a Nikon Coolpix S3 and it’s a good camera that takes great pictures with one BIG problem: the shutter button is very hard to press. It’s small, and it’s hard to press without moving the camera slightly. I don’t like to use flash, so this limits the photos I can take in low light.

Be sure to handle any camera you are thinking of buying. Ergonomics is a big thing in a camera – no matter how great the photos, if you have trouble seeing a shot, or pressing a button, it’s a pain. My H has a Canon elph, and I am definitely getting one of those next time. It has a larger, smoother action shutter button.
