To the Science Concentrators

How did you fulfill the one year of calculus requirement (I’m a bio concentrator, I presume others have the same requirements)? Is APMA 0650 accepted as a substitute (or “equivalent placement”) for the second semester of it?

For Bio, you can indeed use a stats class to substitute the second semester of calculus, subject to your concentration advisor’s approval, and barring other considerations such as med school.

Im getting an ScB in Biology

Oh in that case, then probably not. AP scores still do place you out of MATH 9 and 10 though. Also, completion of a multivariable class or APMA 33 would probably convince your advisor that you know the material in MATH 10. As for stats, I don’t think APMA 65 cuts it as it doesn’t make use of calculus, although upper-level classes like APMA 165 might.

I don’t know anything about the way the courses at Brown work, but I can tell you for certain, calculus is required by most, if not all medical schools. Generally, a statistics course is also required, so substituting one for the other probably won’t work.

Wait, a 5 in AP BC means you don’t have to take a math course for bio sc.b, right? I was hoping never to have to take math again…

^Yes, but med schools might not be happy with that - it depends on the school. Some require college statistics, and some require calculus. Some don’t accept AP credit towards their requirements, so BC calc might be insufficient. Be sure to check out the programs in advance so you don’t disqualify yourself from them by not taking more math.

I’ve checked a lot of top med school requirements…repeatedly. It seems that a year of college math is mandatory, but it is mainly split into calc and stats. So, one semester of calc at Brown (Math 10) and then a stats class (for me, APMA 0650), will satisfy the math component.

@Zulatooka - sorry, that comment was directed at idiotqueen92, who in other threads has suggested the possibility of attending med school as well.

I know, I was clarifying for the future lurkers. I am also trying to figure out if placing out of Math 9 and into 10 by taking the test (and then completing Math 10) would satisfy the Math prerequisite for the ScB in Biology. I keep thinking that Bio requires a year of calc, no matter where you start.

It’s possible. The CS department lets you out of math requirements through placement, it seems. I wouldn’t take it as a given, though, and it might be worth e-mailing a departmental advisor.

I did talk to Mrs. Thompson, but after five to six messages, it’s still unclear to me. I think she says that, even if I don’t have AP credit, if I place out of Math 9 and into Math 10, Math 10 is the only calc course required for an ScB in Biology.

@Uroogla I’m a PLME and I probably won’t be applying out.

Haha this is the first time I’ve heard someone refer to Dean T as “Mrs Thompson”.

Also I think MATH 10 is all you need for Biology, regardless of whether you get it through placement or by actually taking the class.

Let’s hope so. Calc is the bane of my existence.

@idiotqueen92 - then it should be sufficient
