Today's reminder that I'm OLD

I was pretty sure I didn’t need to renew my DL this year, and was also pretty sure I needed to do it next year. Someone told me there is a new rule that if your picture is more than 10 years old you have to go the DMV to get a new license and can’t do it online, and that there is no more ‘walk in’ option and you have to have an appointment (and they are hard to get, so I don’t know how these two new rules will jive). I thought I’d better double check that renewal date since it was my birthday last week.

I renewed it last year (no recall of that) so I’m good till 2029. My passport doesn’t renew till 2032.

WHAT is it that needs to be renewed next year?

Have you had any ‘reminders’ that you may be missing something lately?

Old is when the TSA agent is the one who notices your drivers license is expired. It was made worse when I realized my first “Real ID” expired before it was finally mandatory.

What needs to be renewed yearly? Tags on your license plate?

Speaking of tags… We had 2 cars up for renewal. I paid as soon as I got the notification in Mid June - stickers expire July 31. The next week, they come in the mail. I put them on the mail table. The following week, I want to put them on the cars. Where are they? They are gone. I have no idea where they went. H doesn’t touch anything on the mail table, so it’s all on me. And the mail table is generally empty - as it was that day. I spend some time looking for them - nada.

So, I had to make an appointment to go to the DMV to get them replaced. I went on Monday. In VA you don’t HAVE to have an appointment, but I highly recommend it. It’s the first time I’ve been in there since the covid lockdown and I had to renew my license. It was super busy, but I got called in right away. Had to pay $2 for new stickers, but otherwise not a problem.

But ugh! Where did they go? I have no idea. Only think I can think of it that I picked them up and threw them away with the junk mail for the day.

Those are also every July, but I can do that on line. The good news was it is my year for an emissions inspection, which is a royal PITA but there is a system where you can drive by a machine an get it done without waiting in line at the stupid place which is run by a contractor and the parking lot is black topped and it is always a million degrees and I always have to wait hours. I somehow drove by the machines so I don’t have to go to the inspection center. I still have to pay the $25, but I don’t have to sit on the black top sizzling in the July heat.

I just thought there was something I needed to remember to renew in 2026. I guess I have a year to think of it.

In Florida all your car tags expire on your birthday. If you have 5 cars, all 5 renew the same day. Not the day before, or the end of the month, all expire ON your birthday. Happy Birthday!

We used to buy an annual parking pass for our car to use the town’s commuter lot. It was competitive and expensive. I would wait on line early in December and get a physical tag to hang from the rear view mirror. One year, come January 1 I could not for the life of me find that tag. I rummaged through everything and eventually found it (I can’t remember where). My husband was sure I had accidentally thrown it out. Note this was many years ago - when I was not yet old!

One of the reasons we have AAA for our kids is you can get AAA to provide DMV services at certain southern CA locations. The lines are MUCH shorter.

The exact same thing happened to my H last fall. He had to go in person (appointment required in our state) & pay again. And yeah, it was a reminder that he is old …

I try to do things like affixing stickers (or paying bills) the day they arrive, so I don’t lose them or have them disappear or have “life happen” to them. Haha!

In Arizona, standard driver’s licenses for individuals under 65 are valid until their 65th birthday (after that, they must be renewed every five years). I got my AZ DL in ‘99 and have renewed it only once. I accompanied my mom for her renewal at 85; they only made her read an eye chart that was about arm’s length away(!). She’s good until 90 regardless of how she drives. Gotta love the Wild West.

The daily reminder that I’m old is all the defective mirrors in our house.

Not here!

But you do have to get a new landfill sticker every June.

Same in Georgia, no drivers test for anyone except their original license at 15/16 years. Which is just bizarre because my vision is better the older I get due to cataract removal!

In HI, once you reach 72, you can only get license renewed for 2 years but it’s just show up, eye test & payment—no written nor driver test. We gave a LOT of old drivers, including all our legislators!

No drivers test in CT after the initial license…BUT the license does need to be renewed.

College class of 2030 threads!

…and those of us who will become empty nesters with that year…

What reminds me I am old is looking at my waistline. I weigh the same as I have for years, I’m the same height I’ve been for years (well, close to it), but I’ve gone up a size – all due to everything from the upper part of my body falling and settling at my waist.

ETA: I just saw this and it’s perfect.

Seeing sold-out concerts (at good size venues) of artists I’ve never heard of. (c26 is going to one tonight. A world tour that is apparently sold out most places…)

Realizing that I have vivid memories of NYC’s near bankruptcy in early 1975. (Times Square was among the most disgusting places on earth.)

I lived in NYC then too. Times Square was not Disneyland or Disneyworld but I would hardly call it hell on earth, except perhaps for those who acquired HIV, then AIDS who were treated in the worst possible ways until they died.
