I was lifting in the gym this morning with mostly 40s-50s pound dumbbells. Not bad for an “old” lady. It was chest and back day, so bigger weights are needed. And that was after a hilly 7 mile run in horrible, disgusting weather, and 20 min on the stationary bike…
Actually, the only time I’m reminded that I’m old(er) is when I look in the mirror and don’t see a 20-year-old. Having a hip replaced a few years ago made me feel older but, now, I’m good as new and can do everything I’ve always done.
I guess what reminds me that I’m not THAT old is exactly that — I don’t feel any meaningful body limitations yet, and I don’t have any health issues. Knock on wood.
Tuesday was a jam-packed day of non-stop activity with my 4 year old GD. I am amazed sometimes by how I am able to keep up with her. She is very physical, and she makes sure that I follow along. While I’m tired afterwards, I can still do everything she wants me to do.
I think I need to reverse the title of this one to what DOESN’T make me feel older. But, I did do the sit on floor/get up from floor (no hands) without any issues, so that made me feel good. I am also the only one “of my age” that passes our yearly physical intervention class at work. One of the issues is that you need to be able to stand from kneeling while bearing someone else’s weight. I’d say about 1/2 the people 10 years younger than me can’t do it. (Now I’ll go add to the Things That Annoy Me thread how this seems to have no bearing on their ability to keep their positions, so why are we required to do this training and how come I don’t make more, because per our contract, I now have to step in and do the interventions that they can’t be certified to do)
This past week I made it up the 215 steps to the observation deck at the top of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty (I think that 195 of these are internal to the pedestal, the rest are just to get inside the base of the statue).
How timely that this thread started today. For my 63rd birthday this morning, I met with my great swim buddies for a 2 mile ocean swim. We are all in our late 50s and 60s. We are a pretty fast group!
As I was entering the surf I contemplated how grateful I was to have a body that still lets me be out in the big water and friends who can join me.
And about 1 mile into the swim we were joined by a big pod of dolphins! I could not have asked for a better birthday adventure.
Happy birthday, a day late. I spent my birthday this year in Kauai. On my actual birthday, not 1 but 2 different sea turtles swam VERY close to me. That totally made my day. I love dolphins, whales and sea turtles.
