TOEFL Exemption at Umass

I was reading the international students requirements for undergraduate enrollment at Umass Amherst and I was scared since they asked for TOEFL/IELTS and since I want to apply early, I would be very short on time to take the test. They also stated that students with strong SAT scores would be exempted from these examinations.

But I called Admissions and fortunately, the minimum score is 400. Which is a joke.
I mean, my first SAT wasn’t that great either (650 reading) but it’s way greater than the minimum which means I was worried for nothing :)

But then i asked myself the folloqing question: Does that mean that they can accept students with less than 400 in reading? I mean, that is a very low score and I think it’s too low for an international student to be admitted, don’t you think?

That is a question for the international admissions office rather than an internet forum, don’t you think? They have many years of experience evaluating potential students from different language, cultural, and educational backgrounds. I’m sure they have their reasons for setting the minimum acceptable scores where they do.

I was just wondering. That’s what I think.
