TOEFL for Stanford RD

I’m an RD applicant for Stanford who took the TOEFL before (results aren’t so satisfying), and am wondering if I should submit/send the scores to Stanford.

The thing is, I’m an American citizen, lived in America for about 8 - 9 years, and have my social security number, but i’m living in Canada right now, and I’ve lived in Korea for about 7 years after living in America, before coming to Canada.
I thought I had to take the TOEFL test, cause I didn’t live the past 4 years in an English speaking country, so I took it 2008 may. (got 103 on iBT) But my friend recently told me that I didn’t have to take the test if I had my social security number (He did the same thing, and got into Rice ED without TOEFL)

So my questions are…

Was taking the TOEFL really unnecessary? (after all, I did get 35 on ACT)
and

If I took the test, do I still have to send it or can I choose not to send it?

Thanks!
DL

There are some schools that require you to take the TOEFL if you indicate that your first language was something other than English. However Stanford does not require you to take it regardless of this, but they say on their website that they would like to see it if you have taken it.

Honestly, they really won’t care whether you send it or not but I suggest you send it since 103 is a decent score. If you decide that you really want them to consider it and choose to send it then make sure you do it fast because TOEFL takes ages to send scores, sometimes even over a month! (Well Stanford looks at the postmarked date so it won’t matter as long as you send it before January 1st, but you know what I mean, the faster the better)

Nice to see a fellow Korean applying  Good luck!

I see haha thanks :stuck_out_tongue: I was just worried cause my speaking score was very low compared to the others, (and I didn’t want to take the test again because it cost a frig’n $200).
But Oh well :stuck_out_tongue: yea i think you’re right, 103 IS a decent score.

btw, so you’re korean too, eh? haha
where do you live? :P

I live in Switzerland (it’s a long story…) how about you?

I’m in Ontario, Canada :P,
but Switzerland eh? nicee hahaha
So, do you use any other language besides English there?? (*cough french?? )
