This is not a concern for me personally, but I am curious about the relative importance of TOEFL scores versus verbal or writing GRE scores for international students. I have heard conflicting opinions on this topic (albeit mostly from applicants). Some say universities don’t care about international students’ verbal scores and focus on their TOEFL scores instead. Others say that GRE verbal scores are quite important because the TOEFL is too easy to provide a good measure of English proficiency.

Is there some general consensus, or do practices vary wildly between departments/fields/universities?
